My mate has asked me to get him a 'starter' system together. He has £600 to spend.

He likes indie and rock music. Could you guys suggest some combos.

I was thinking about

B&W DM601 S3
Cambridge audio azur 540A
Marantz cd5400

Would this combo be ok?

What do you guys suggest?

cheers bottle

I think an integrated amp would be better, however never had any experience of passive amps

keep the suggestions coming :-)

I think he should go with secondhand, some real bargains to be had, especially on ebay at the moment.

what about

Cambridge Azur 340C CD - £150
Cambridge Azure 340A Amp - £150
Mission M731 - Speakers - £120
From Richer Sounds

2nd hand or ex-dem/end of line.

I think these are a bargain:

Agree that the NAD C521BEE for 169.99 is a good buy.

That leaves around £250 for an amp. Lots of options there. Can pick up a MF X-80 for that or less if you look around.

The NAD C370 can be picked up second-hand within budget and is a great amp. Rotel are worth looking at too:

- would allow more to spend on the CD player.

Yeah gonna suggest the NAD C521BEE to him for cd player, just read some reviews

leaves me £437 for both speakers and amp + cables.

Oh he's just told me that he can only have book shelf speakers as hes at uni

Ask him about the room at Uni. If hes planning on having the speakers on the end of the typical student type room then it might not be worth spending oodles on em. Either that or go for something like a Denon dm33 and some half descent speakers and save a bit of cash.
