i've had to order a new car as the lease on my current finishes in a month or so.

i was going to have something bigish and quickish. The honda accord 2.4 sport was the favourite. sense/wife prevailed and i ended up ordering a corolla t sport. Obviosly I haven't done anything sensible like look at one or let alone drive the thing so i wondered if anyone else has one and if so perhaps they could let me know what they think of it.

    john,
i hope you got some serious concessions in exchange for the thumbprint. corollas are always a bit nondescript but as they are made by toyota they last for ever and will be the only things left on the planet except for the scorpions after a nuclear war.
is the t sport version the one with the quick vvt engine? if so it's not civic type r or clio sport good as the handling's a bit sloppy but for everyday pootling and a bit of a sunday morning thrash when your wife gives you your testes back it's ok. ;)
    cheers

Looks wise, the new corolla is distinctly inoffensive. Not as gawky as the old one, or as thouroughly dull and white goods like as the one before that (the one clarkson compared to a fridge). It won't set the world on fire, but it won't make you cringe either (except the adverts).

Mechanicals... well, can you go wrong with the japanese really (In fact, I'm failing to see why an accord 2.4 is not a sensible choice, other than my own view that an engine this size should be 6 cylinders rather than 4)? My mitsubishi has 81000 miles on it, and no problems at all. It's even on the original discs (although I'm going to have them replaced at 87k because they're warping quite badly). There's a good chance that my next car will be japanese too (lexus and subaru are looking likely) because I'm out for the easy life. My parent's BMW has proven rather high maintenance, and with clarkson's comments on his merc the illusion of dependable german cars is shattered.

The only issue I can see you might face is that japanese cars are pretty anonymous (personally, I like not being noticed, and would rather slip by in a lexus than have everyone watching me in a merc).

    Hello John,
The Accord 2.4 seems perfectly reasonable to me. These are good cars to drive, comfortable, practical and safe. So is the Corolla (as long as it's VVT), but I'd take the Honda.

I'm procuring the car through a company car/private leasing scheme cooked up between my employer and a leasing outfit so the main financial consideration is whether i want to spend more or less a month than the tax i pay on my current company car. The honda would be 50 ukp more and the t sport 80 less. I really liked the honda but given i live in centralish london and my office is a five mile crawl each way and that we've a 1 y.o nipper it seemed silly to spend any more than i had to.

the t sport is a bit of a bargain , has four doors and the 190 bhp engine. I like that it's plain looking. The only thing i really wasn't sure about the accord was the pretty aggressive styling and the chrome door handles.

    John,

Given the age of your nipper, surely it would make sense to get a bigger car for ease of access, and a faster one to make sure your precious offspring has to spend less time in it at the risk of all the other idiots on the road;)
