    Car speakers -- 4" woofer!

My car has a factory spec 'sub-woofer' under the seat. It's a 4" woofer in a metal box structure. It's a litle tatty and I'd like to replace it, preferably with something that fits right back into the box. Thus I'm looking for something that goes fairly low (40-50Hz) which is 4" diameter.

Obviously at 4" I'm not looking for anything of living room audio quality :) Something fairly cheap and cheerful will do.

Anyone have any advice, even on the kinds of brands that I should avoid? I have an Alpine h/u -- are their speakers okay? Either that or Kickers?

Thanks for the link Mart. The Panasonic and the Clarion both look skinny enough. I'll have to measure the available space under the seat, and confirm the connections.

Mind you, the specs on those things may look ok, but in reallity, its trying to get low frequencies from a driver that isnt physically big enough.

You would get a lot better results form a good boot mounted bass enclosure with a ten inch driver and a seperate amp for not a lot more dosh.

Dont think that this would give you the hammering bass you hear for the boyracer machines that you see posing at the traffic lights, these guys put this stuff in the boot, then turn the gains all the way up and proceed to hammer the tits out of it.

I've built many systems for people who are after pure musicality, infinity kappa and pheonix gold are favourates with 90% of folks I've built systems for but can be expensive.

My personal fav is infinity for the speakers and vibe amps to drive the subs.

My car has pretty limited space, so I'd rather not sue up what's there with a speaker -- thus I'd like to try to stick to the current under-seat location. As you say, I'm not going to get ricer-boy bass (and I'm not looking for that either). What I'd like is just a litle more rounded than I have now. I'll keep an eye out for the Infinity though, thanks.
