EEEK!!!!

I've mentioned this before, but the problem seemed to have sorted itself out.

I'll try and describe it as best as possible

The background "hum" of the computer stops. I guess this is the fan hard drive or the power supply?

The last couple of time it's done it, it's froze for a while, then I've either had to restart, or it's restarted itself. However, when trying to restart you can hear the "hum" trying to start and failing. Like trying to start a car up, but it wont turn over and hold. A sort of hum which lasts for a couple of seconds or so then dies out. Sometimes there's a sort of clicking noise too

After a while it seems to get over it and manages to hold the power.

I've tried forcing it to happen. Starting up quite a few demanding prog's (outlook, several media players, AutoCAD, and a couple of browsers etc...), which has no effect. This last time it happened, I wasn't even in the room but came back to find it trying to restart.

I think when I mentioned this before someone said that if it was the fan then the processor would have fried by now.

Any advice what to do?

Luckily I'd saved my work not long ago, so didn't anything.

Cheers

Try installing some monitoring software like Motherboard Monitor, can be found HERE and clicking on downloads at the top.

You can set this to monitor your case, cpu and hard disk temps, and it will show motherboard voltages and fan speeds.
If you set it to log all the variables and save them to a file, you can than check the file after the next lock-up and see if anything is way out of spec.
