Andrew, I dont know if your hifi is anywhere near your PC, but if it is I suggest you consider trying the E-MU 0404 soundcard. I think it sounds absolutely amazing for something that costs only £70, and it uses the AKM AK4395 chip which is one of AKM's top ones. The sound is very lively, dynamic and detailed, with excellent powerful bass and a warm sound.

Thanks for the tip Paul but sadly I use a laptop and that is rarely in the same place for more than 5 minutes.
I have a Netgear MP101 for mp3 duties (no digital out on that though), I might take it apart to have a look at the chips though!
