Someone told me I need to get a Olympus one to make sure the software works? That the case or can I get any old card as long as it fits?

Well...I took the plunge, hit jessops and bought an E-10 second hand. I know I paid a bit over the odds on the card and batteries but I just wanted to get started.

Camera £315 after 10% off on used stuff.
    8 2000mah with charger £15
    256 sandisk cf card £30
+50 free prints at jessops and a 3 year warranty including cover for accidental damage.

Now I've got 30 days to try her out and see what I think. She is pretty bulky and a bit slow but I'll see how I get on. Its nice to have the optical viewfinder and manual focus but it isn't something I can just slip in my pocket on a day out. I knew all this before of course so I'll just see if it suits me.

Not a bad choice, although I wouldn't have paid quite that for it (as I only paid £550 for my canon D30 slr 18 months ago). However, it should give you plenty to work with, and it's one of the favourites out there with a great many happy users. I'm sure michaelab can give you any help with it if you need, as he has an E series (is it a 10 or 20 michael?).

Yeah I figured I could have got it cheaper but its nice to have the Jessops 30 day return thing and a long warranty for peace of mind.

Michael has the E-10 which was one of the main reasons for buying it after seeing his shots and deliberating over what I would get for the same money from the current crop of cameras. Its my first proper camera so I've got a lot of trial and error to go through which should highlight its strengths and weaknesses for me.

Nice one! The E-10 is one of the classic D-SLRs and a great camera. Any questions and I should be able to help you and there are still a fair number of E-10 users on the dpreview Oly SLR forum who should be able to help out.

You said "a bit slow" - in what respect? Compared to most digi cameras (even current ones) it's lightning fast, especially in having absolutely no shutter delay. I was using my wife's Nikon Coolpix 3100 point-and-shoot during the recent festivities and found it's shooting delay totally infuriating!

Just take in the wonderful tactile feel of a proper smooth manual/mechanical zoom and even the focus ring feels just like a manual one (allthough it's "fly by wire" under the hood).

    Michael.

I meant in the playback options and writing to the card rather than the operation, shouldn't be too much of a problem for me though. You're right about the zoom, it feels great, real pleasure to use. I've printed off the manual so I'm going to sit down and read through it this evening, some of it anyway its 200 pages! glad I did it 2 pages per sheet and double sided!
