Apparently, according to a news item I've just heard on the radio, they reckon that most of us will be staying in for house parties this new year's eve rather than going out on the town. They've drawn this conclusion by virtue of the fact that supermarkets and off-licenses have reported last moment surges in business with people stock piling alcohol, snacky items, etc.

Don't think I've ever celebrated a new year's eve ever yet out on the town! Paying an entrance fee to get into a pub (that's usually free to get into), double or triple rates for taxis home, etc... Who needs it eh? :p

So, not changing the habit of a lifetime, I'll be off to a mate's house tomorrow night for a few drinks and not too much overcrowding... ;)

What are the rest of you guys up to? :)

For the 7th year running, I shall be staying at home for New Years Eve. I have a special friend to see the New Year in with ;)
Much Champagne will be consumed :)

I was supposed to be going out but people pulled out.

I am going out on saturday instead and spending a bit more than I usualy would should be a good night.

I am staying in tomorrow night so it will be a boring evening in front of the TV.

no such luck here, wont get out of work much before 11pm,and back in for 12 new years day, so a quiet night in with a bottle of schnapps and a smoke or 3.however intend to celabrate big time next week in amsterdam :D

Going to a friends.

To be honest, I've never had a good night on new years eve yet. Paying to get into bars, paying bouncers for "charity work" when in reality they are collecting for their cocaine and steroid fund. 5 deep queues at the bar waiting to get served for £4-£5 drinks. £20+ admission into nightclubs, £30+ taxi journeys, a town full of part timers that come out once a year, cant handle their drink, and start trouble. Having to look after my own friends who get themselves into states.

What is the point in NYE anyway? I've never needed an excuse to go out drinking, but it seems all these part timers need an excuse. Well bugger that, I'm gonna save my money for a normal night, when there'll still be plenty out, and when prices are normal. NYE is just not for me.

BTW, I think people are starting to catch on to that fact - apparently there are record booze sales at supermarkets in the run up this year - meaning people are either having house parties or staying in. People are wising up....

Thats made me a feel a bit better. I was kind of thinking I will be the only person stuck in but I am probably not. I won't be going to a house party either though:( .

We are going out on saturday instead which will probably be a better tonight, the Horse and Jockey ( a pub near me) sold their tickets within 1 hour. Badly Drawn Boy will be there too so I wanted to go to that. The other bars charge like £10 to get in (this is just my local area).

The clubs charge around £10 entry in Manchester but they will be packed and the music will probably be more commerical. Then there is the hassle of getting back, well I have a night bus running till 4:00am but they will be packed and won't be cheap.

When I move out I can have my own house parties though.:)

Have to agree with what you say there Paul. :) I'm guessing it must have something to do with the combined fact that most people have the following day off work and that NYE is some kind of (psychological?) big calendar event (but why people need these so called big calendar events has always baffled me - I mean Y2K - oh there's lots of 0's in the year - let's go mad  ).

The "part-timer" thing is certainly true. I mean, on the Tuesday in the week before Christmas, a couple of mates and myself went out for a mate's birthday for some drinks. Now the bar we went to isn't known for being rough, but that evening they had had 3 fights in there and ended up closing half an hour before normal closing time because the bar staff were getting fed up of the hassle. Obviously, this was due to all day drinking binges from those people who had had the week off work (and who wouldn't normally be binging/drinking as much).

Hi,

I'll be DJing this new year eve. I'll be working at the Leadmill in Sheffield. Not sure how busy it will be. I agree with alot of what has been said. I do think that clubs will be as busy as in past years.

Should be a laugh.

happy new year everbody.

Going out for a nice meal with the g/f.
She hates New Year and, like most these days, can't be arsed with all the hassle. Should be good to see the faces of the local yokels as I make my way through the town fully kilted :D.

The local Scottish bar here is doing a deal where if you buy one of their 50 Euros tickets; all the drink free is from 20:00 until 03:00. Now THATS a binge.

Finaly managed to get something organized. Over the local. £5 ticket which is refunded on the door. Just to MOnitor numbers really.

We normaly do the house party thing with family and friends. Last year my folks went to a thing with their mates, and that was the first NYE I'd actualy gone out! Older brother and his girlfriend were running a pub, so me other brother, and our g'fs went their before heading home about 2am for a house party :D

Will probably be the same tonight. Meeting quite a few people over the pub then will probably all pile back here after.

As for the record sales and that, my mum's just returned from local Asda and said that there was hardly anything left in there, drink wise!

I've a feeling something may *kick off* tonight. Things have been boiling up a little lately with some friends and girlfriends and such. Should be interesting to see how a bit of alcohol stirs it up.

for me NYE is about being with good friends.

Yep. And family. And as I said, we'll probably all meet up back here after. My folks get on quite well with my mates, and vice versa, so it's quite fun watching them join in with drinking games and such.

Have a good un people! However you soend it :D

I'm so bored and fed up it feels like the entire country is out and I am stuck in on my own.

The TV is crap as always. Oh well maybe I should drink myself to sleep.

I just need to look forward to saturday but its still not the same:(

Chaps

We always pop out to a very good French restaurant in the cotswolds on NYE. We have an eight course meal followed by champagne at midnight. We have been doing this for more years than I can recollect. Everyone dresses up in DJ's etc and it is one of the best nights of the year.

Unfortunately they have shut down, so this year we are staying home and I am sinking a bottle of malt instead.

It does seem rather dull I must admit.

Regards

Mick

Stumbled in at 6 this morning from my regular, no entry fee, same prices, everyone I know was out and all the regulars were too - just like saturday night except we got an extra 4 hours drinking :) Good music, good friends, good night.

We (my wife, my mother in law and myself) went to my Parent's. Very merry and sweet evening, and since the 31st is my birthday I received a lot of wonderful and very meaningful presents. We dinned in the big dinning room and then spent the rest of the evening before a big fire. Not a drop of alcohol, which I actually like: the conversation is always more interesting.

We had some music, too. My mother was, as always, trying to convince me to the merits of Italian music. I took some records with me to defend myself ââ'¬â€œ but I think they were considered out of the festive spirit, which they undoubtedly were. So in came Italian singing! I was rightfully defeated.

Season's greetings to you all.
