Has technology destroyed my enjoyment of music?

How can it be untrue ? the op asked this
"I've tried forcing myself to listen to albums on CD, but the habit of skipping/picking tracks is a hard one to break!
Anyone else finding themselves in the same situation?"

So I replied
"I hate CD's and Albums, Playlists are much better than albums."

That's the truth.

So for you the truth is different. I can live with that. :)

You stated as a bald fact that "Playlists are much better than albums". (also you edited yourswelf in this version - you deleted a chunk from the middle of you orginal post and then ran them together as if it were one sentence, which changes the meaning of what you said).

I didn't say it WAS untrue, I merely stated one of the possible situations where it really might be true. I can also think of situations where it is untrue - two examples might be, a) when you have lots of really good albums, or b) when you haven't got the attention span of a goldfish.

In other words your statement (stated as fact not opinion if you go back and read your own original post, not your edited version) is not universally true.

If you are saying that you merely believe Playlists to be better, then sure its true that that's what you believe. Maybe you have the attention span of a goldfish, I really don't know.

Edit: oh yes I forgot ... :)

Regarding remote controls, it has long amused me to watch my Mother when she has the telly on. She keeps the remote control on top of the set and when she wants to change channel she gets up, walks across the room and flips channels while standing in front of the set. When I asked her about keeping the remote on the arm of the sofa or coffee table, she merely said that it was what she was used to and saw no reason to change just because the tv manufacturers had decided she should.

Seems fair enough....!

I think she's on to something too :) Too easy to flick across channels/tracks so having to get up and do it reveals that in my case, there's just enough inertia to get me to leave it be :D

In my case no but I don't listen to your kind of music.
I noticed that lot of people hardly listen to a whole album. They just hear what they like and never give a chance to anything they didn't like when listening the first two times. Actually I don't mind about that: its their problem.

I though systematically avoid listening to music except for at home and for live concerts. In the car or walking / jogging around I concentrate on what is happening around me. After all that is where I'm actually living and I try to appreciate (or consciously acknowledge) my surroundings. If people find their lives are boaring and need some help from music on those occasions, that is their problem, but I understand them.

The industries recognized the fact that people want to be mobile and at the same time have their goodies with them. Technologies of portable devices have made great steps also in the direction of making music as a good to be used once or twice and then to be trashed. If someone doesn't care about what that means, he should go on with the technology.
This step is not necessary even if you love music and recognize it as art.

At the end, the only thing that counts, is that we get happier.

Indeed I have had this problem... but... you could view it as a decline in somehting you are used to or just a change to the rules...?

For exmaple, im less likely to listen to those 'weaker' tracks now and you could say that is forcing us makers of music to up our game... Or that the emphasis is now on the song in its singularity...

But yes, you do sometimes ache for the intrigue and excitement of getting a new LP with its sometimes large collection of artwork etc. Kinda like finding a magical-looking box buried at the bottom your back garden as opposed to a cellophane wrapped high-sugar cola bottle...well, maybe haha.

But yeah, I just feel things have changed... I have a few ideas in how to re-inject that mystery into music though...

Oh yes, the wonder of touching and looking at a big vinyl cover! Brilliant. The other thing though is a tendency towards 'highlights' only and being too easily bored with the, do i dare call them 'lowlights'? That's not really what I mean but you get my drift. When I were a lad... a new record would have been played and played and played and as I remember it, there were no lowlights. Now I have a good smattering of Best Of albums (CDs) and I don't even play all of the best of...

And how often do I get to sit and listen to an opera right through, following the libretto..?

Man, I sooo need to win the Lottery! :D

Just buy 'Fun House' by the Stooges. Not listening to the whole thing is a criminal offence.

yeah its weird how things have gone isnt it. but lets not be like the slow moving juggernaut majors who tried to deny change and keep things the same by moaning and forcing their will on everyone.

you hear universal or some one tried to tell carphone warehouse that they shouldnt let people who download music subscribe to their service? - carphone warehouse said erm...go f**k yourself haha - obviosuly downloading for free is hurting those (like me!) who want to make a living but c'mon guys, more tact.

so yeah, some people out their are adapting to the change and doing well from it in terms of the business side and the enjoyment side. lets not be like those much feared/hated/sought after majors!
