chris, are you retiring fully or are you just downshifting?
Downshifting :)

I'm sick of all the corporate bs, objectives, appraisals, expected behaviours and other corporate b*llocks designed purely to hold people back and keep a lid on pay rises. I'm sick of working for managers who don't recognise effort and achievement when it hits them on the nose and who accuse you of having a poor attitude if you say 'no' when they want to hear 'yes' even though 'no' is the correct answer. I'm sick of working for morons who don't know what they want or don't know how to specify it. I'm sick of goal posts that move every two months and turn most of my hard work into waste paper. I'm sick of the lack of tangible appreciation for my efforts. I'm sick of managers and support staff who are slow, inefficient, incompetent or often all three at once. I'm sick of being bled to death by the Inland Revenue. I'm pretty sick of Systems Engineering too. Most of what I do is deeply boring

I'll be taking all of August off to lie on a beach somewhere and then in September I might start thinking about what to do next

personally i'm in favour of legalising all drugs, with commensurate taxes levied on their sale to cope with health and order problems caused (although i doubt the impact would be great).

Here, here. Crime would be slashed as drug prices crashed and people no longer have to burgle and mug in order to feed their habits. The money saved on crime investigation could then be spent on helping people to get off drugs (assuming they want to - I don't really see a problem with people smoking cannabis although I don't personally). Insurance could be a lot cheaper too :MILD:

I have no problem with legalising drugs, but people smoking weed at bus stops, in pubs etc, that is what I have a problem with. If people want to smoke dope in their own homes then I have no problem at all with that.

Just as a side note if drugs were legalised there would be no work for drug dealers what other crime are they going to turn to? In this respect I doubt it would lower crime.

Can't you do what you do on a contract basis - that way you would be free of all the performance management bollocks, earn 2 or 3 times the salary and be secretly delighted each time the management move the goal posts as that would mean a contract extension.

Matt.

Funnily enough, since I handed in my resignation and am thus now free of all the crap and only have to care about the project work, I have started to have just these thoughts. I think I probably could do this job as a contractor and start enjoying it again. I'll see how I feel about it in September.

BTW, it tends to be the customers who move the goal posts regularly. I won't work in this particular sector of the market again. (Edited to add: unless the pay is truly obscene :D ).

Labour get my vote, because our local MP is a nice bloke, lives in the house right behind mine, always speaks to us, and is very active within his constituency.

Then theres the other candidates for my constituency, a seriously scary looking Enoch Powell doppelganger from the BNP, who lives in a 'Jamaica Inn' somewhere in Cornwall, which seems somehow funny and ironic to me. Theres the conservative candidate who lives in Leicester yet claims to be local by virtue of a dodgy postal address set up for her, and the Lib Dem candidate (who's too liberal by half).

Of course it would lower crime. All us weed smokers would no longer be criminals. Obvious innit. :MILD:

I would have voted Monster Raving Loonies if they'd had a canditdate... Nearest thing was the UKIP(*) chap with his union jack waistcoat and eye firmly in the past ;)
Aka Tory - at least they'll take some votes off Slimy Howard, much the same as the LibDems will probably take votes off Tone..
BTW, I'm LibDem too - round here it's either that or Tory, with Green having a very slim chance (BTW LibDems and Green both say they'll legalise weed :D)

I think voting for your local MP is a good idea, my local MP is not too bad, but he is cockey in the same way Micheal Howard is.

The tories have more chance of ruling Australia than being elected near me as all our local tory MPs are quite frankly awful.

For me the only credable choices are Labour and Lib Dem hence the reason I'm not voting.

i'd like to see a green / lib dem coalition - as i was wavering between l/d and green today.
as i said before smoking / legalised drug use in pubs would be ok by me as long as there were smoke / drug free alternatives and the staff were properly compensated for working in a 'dangerous' environment.

chris,
i downshifted and went contract / self employed 2 years ago. best thing i ever did career wise. i'm not as well off as i was when i was employed full time but then i'm not working 20 hour days and living on caffine and takeaways. definately the way to go if you have the opportunity although it can be scary at first. the thing is i had very good reasons to do this, not just being pissed off with my work - in fact i was enjoying it massively - so i was still motivated to do stuff, it's all to peggy bundy it for a month or 6 and find things have moved on.

edited to add - i wonder if you added up all the people who voted labout by default instead of lib dem to block the tories it would amount to anything. i live in a huge tory stronghold but i still voted l/d in the optimistic hope that others would do the same. some hope by the looks of things - another 4/5 years of that fcuker blair with bush's arm up his arse then.
cheers

And who should we blame for this...... Micheal Howard? .......... voters without balls?

I may be old school, but to my mind all tory voters younger than say 60 should be shot

So there is a reason why Jaguar, Rover and Conversatives have all stuggeled in recent years :D

The way its going I can't see the blues ever getting into power again. I think John Towers has more chance of being elected as a local MP for the Longbridge area.

The tories are in power in Australia and have been for many years.

AT, you started off being a non-voting tory and now your slating them, in the space of about 10 posts  Nothing personal, but considering your about to be get a degree Im deeply worried, if your a trypical graduate of 2005 Im leaving the country, we're f**ked.

They do! The Liberal Party in Australia is anything but these days. Guess that's what happens when the Labour Party moves to the right - the Libs had to move even further to the right.

I said I am a tory but I would not be voting for them becuase they are now pathetic. What I meant was I am traditionaly a tory. Also I have no idea who runs Australia and I meant the British tory party it was just a figure of speech which was made when I was very tired, I should have done research for making the huge mistake of stating somthing that didn't make sense on a HIFI forum.

Anyway Keith Bradley is out in my local area, serves the cokey gits right, he was so certain he would win he didn't even bother running a proper campaign, the Lib Dems won in my local seat.

Ahhhh your a traditional 'tory' what with Howard been 'New Tory' I can see why you wouldnt vote.......

Think you'll find most MP's and candidates dont come from the area they represent and if your a minister you dont go to the area you represent, I think our hallowed leader stood in two tory safe-seats before landing the sedgewick gig. Politics is very much climbing the greasy pole, if your talented or your father-in-law is a peer you'll get a cherry of a seat i.e Lionel Blair & Malc Rifkind, if your a spoon you get the crap ie a Labour candidate in the Ribble Valley or a Tory is Wales, Scotland, NI or most of the North of England.
