But if you really want to know more try the following threads.

    Let's get Digital
    PC based jukebox.
    Squeezebox options

    They cover all the bases.

I have it on pretty good authority that CDS3 is a downgrade from CDS2. If you ever find yourself in Glasgow, you could satisfy your curiosity about ATC actives: Audio Salon stock them.

It's a kind offer. If I'm ever in Glasgow....

I know where you are coming from about the CDS3 but I think you'll take my point that if a £120 Squeezebox can better a CDX then I should get some improvement over the CDS2 when I add a DAC.

Tell you one thing though. My P9 does the business, a totally different league to a bare Squeezebox. :MILD:

After visiting Julian's place yesterday all I can say is that the Squeezebox approach sounds very impressive (as do his new speakers) :) . Tempted to investigate that route myself. Only problem is the need to lay 10m or so of ethernet cable from my office to the hifi system in a subtle way. I don't want to go wireless because wireless reception in my flat is terrible and I'd just prefer the wired approach.

yeah - I dont think you have to see it as a sort of ''either/or'' scenario - why not both?

I'll get a squeezebox and a big HDD one day soon, but it'll be into another input on my pre-amp - alongside the CDP.

I like the jukebox aspect of the squeezebox/HDD, and thats why I want it..

Another solution is to just get a big HDD, and use the PC as my musical jukebox.

    It's all fun :)

If I had the money I'd have done both. In my case it really was "either/or", so unless you wish to support me in the lifestyle I'd like to become accustomed.... ;)
