I'm trying to get a decent home insurance quote at the moment...
And I'm having trouble with getting adequate cover for the hifi ("we don't cover audio/jewellry/tvs/computer stuff for more than £7.5k in total" seems to be the norm)..
Anyone got any suggestions on good insurers who don't demand you have an alarm (I've got dogs, and no neighbours!!), or a "valuation" of the hifi?

Hmmmm... we're with the AA (and you've just reminded me to sort out our renewal) and I asked about this. Basically, they don't specifically 'itemise' hifi - just jewellry and art - and so long as whatever you have fits within the standard £40k contents cover (or whatever extra you've paid for) it's all ok. Basically. We don't have an alarm either, and no dogs (though there's a rather fierce kitten ;) ) but it's not a high crime area.

I must admit we go through the AA and have never had a problem with hifi, there's been claims for cartridges and even a damaged SME arm all without problems,

same here. u have to specify specifics such as jewellry or paintings or other antiques, but hifi goes into the overall "pot" for however much cover you've purchased.
esure have consistently been the cheapest for me.

Aren't there single item limits though in general insurance?

In some policies, yes, although most of the ones I've seen tend to specify a single item limit (around the £1500.00 mark) for valuables(specific goods as mentioned above), as opposed to general items which often don't have an individual limit and just fall under the aforementioned standard contents cover.

We're insured with Nationwide (along with the mortgage/buildings cover) and I've checked the policy very carefully and have found nothing to be concerned about for the hifi - wouldn't say the same for the music collection, though, so this may be a consideration for anyone with a largish and valuable selection of vinyl/cds.

Any of you chaps who have cover with the AA should check it out..
They wouldn't quote me for contents, despite having no claims but probably because I mentioned the stereo , and buildings cover was the same as other quotes for buildings and contents!!!
    Norwich Union best so far..

Just checked Nationwide, and they want nearly £200 more than NU Direct!
MBNA no use either - alarm needed for cover over £45k. Bizarre they give a discount for alarms that nobody takes any notice of, but not for guard dogs!

Pearl or AXA may insure you, the other way would be to get seperate insurance for your valuables.
