    Imagine the scene.

    You are peasent.
You find £1000 in the street.
You yearn to blast it on a music maker to grace your squat.

    Do you,

    a) blast it on a Linn Classik (and rob some speakers)
    b) blast it on an amp/tuner/cdp seperates and interconnects (and rob some speakers

    Why?

    And,

Why the hell do they spoil it with those dodgy speaker conections - and how do you go about using them with 'normal' connectors.

I have a friend who is a peasent.

    Yours reluctantly

You don't need to steal the speakers as you can get the Classik for £750 new from a bucket shop. That leaves the rest for the little Linn 5110s, or the same with the new name, or something else.

The Classik is a classic but a dead end regarding any potential for upgrading. IMHO it should be viewed as a toe in the water for someone not sure what hi-fi could do for them. If they get the bug with the Classik then they must accept that they start from scratch with some separates if they want to upgrade.

    Steve

Edit - I forgot to mention that the Nordost type Z-plugs fit on both the 'dodgy' speaker connectors and standard banana ones. Someone posted a link recently where to get these (or could have been on the fish forum)

    Fair comment :)

But possibly said peasent has no desire to upgrade. Or if he did, there is a great statistical uncertainty in discovering another stray £1000 for such an undertaking.

'bucket shop' - i'm guessing they are found a long walk away from the nearest church then.

    cheers
    :)

    thanks :)

I got mine for a second system from Moorgate Hi-Fi in Sheffield for £750 for a second system 0114 2756048. Lots of other places sell them too. My friend has one with Ninkas and is trying to see how to upgrade without having to shell out for a heap of separates in one go - not really doable (only possibility is to add an external amp, or another CD player to the aux in - silly really.) Having said that, he's over the moon with it, to this day says he doesn't regret a single penny (krone) spent.

    thanks for that.

The more recent 'K' model also has digital out, i am led to believe - for Dac options. Like you mention, pre-outs are available for power-amp possibilities and lin-level for external sources/cdp. But i tend to agree that this is a silly approach. I think it would be best to buy it outright with no desire or consideration for future change, or not at all.

Anyway, so it doesn't sound all that bad then? - i may cop a listen somewhere on my next travels. (oh...and take my peasent friend too)

moi has a classik, its very good, the tuner superb...the amp beat a modded pioneer, the cd is squeaky clean, really refined...it is a bit short of ultimate grunt, and sometimes I feel a little bass light, so the volume needs turning up a bit, for the cash, unbeatable.
Not as good as the naim cd, but the cd cost more than the classik
    .

I am uneasy about it all in one box, tho...in some ways its great, no other boxes/wires all over the place, then again, if it goes wrong you are musicless, and all the bits inside are surface mount, so I can't see how it works:mad: I like my hifi to have massive chunky capacitors and resistors:JPS:

May not be as simple as that. I assume you mean taking a digital out from is and then *looping* it back in to a spare line in? Seems easy enough..... however, when I tried this on one of the mini systems around the house, I noticed a small oversight! To play a cd, you have to select "cd". Makes sense.... However, to switch to the line in (coming from the DACs o/p), you have to switch to "aux" or wherever you've put it in. On some all in one jobbies, selecting the other Line in will turn the cd section off!

This may ont be the case with the Linn, but it may be worth checking first.

    Hey Cookie,

Just going by your title, why would you assume that posting on this forum about the Linn Classik is sacrilegious? If that's the player that floats your boat, then don't let anyone force you into docking that boat. :)

The Linn Classik is a good sounding straight-forward system and a friend of mine has just bought one together with an additional Linn power amp. Don't be ashamed to say you like the Classik dude becuase there is nothing to be ashamed about. Tell your peasant friend to buy with confidence.:D

    Enjoy the music,

    Lawrie:D

Not ashamed Lawrie, just being playful and mischievous in a slightly apprehensive fashion, in the pursuit of 'sensible' (which i mean to include both positive and negative) feedback on this one box offering. Remember, i'm a NAD owner.

Seems many places are offering them for £750 too, which seems very reasonable money.

Still just gleening information at this stage from all stables and budgets. Only sure of a pair of cans thus far.

    cheers

Dino, give Lee a shout. He can let you hear what a Classik sounds like driving his Magneplanars (bloody good, as it happens).

Nice bit of kit, the Classik. Nothing much wrong with it at all, IMO.

Whats cans are you wanting mate?

BTW, I know a dude who upgraded from a NAD 350 amp and a matching CD player and he seemed to think it was a nice enough upgrade. I can see why you want mate ;)
