I've been looking to get my girlfriend a new phone for christmas.
Specifically the z610i. However, she's on o2 payg and the phone doesn't seem to be available with them.

I've seen the phone listed as sim free for up to £250 or available on payg with other networks (Orange do it for £180).

    Soooooooooooooo.....

If I were to buy it on another network, would it be possible to get it unlocked to use her o2 payg sim?
How would I go about this, and how much would it cost?

    Ta

If you ask the shop they can change phone numbers over so she can keep her old number.

if you can get it on vodaphone they tend not to lock their phones (neither do o2 unfortunately for you - i recently switched from orange to o2 and used my orance sim in my new phone for a week or so until the number switched).
if orange is the cheapest you should be able to get it unlocked at any decent dodgy backstreet phone dealer or market stall.

I believe newer phones aren't so easy to unlock and you need to get it done through the network.

It's not just about keeping the number, the o2 payg deal is pretty good.

I called 3 (who MOst of the phones seem to be locked to) and they (from what I gathered) said it's £15 to get it unlocked.

Roughly £150 locked. £250 sin free.

    I'll take the £150 unlocked + £15 unlock fee thanks :)

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, I called 3 and was told I'd be able to get it unlocked for £15, so went ahead and shelled out £160 for the phone.

Arrived today and I've just got off the phone from 3. They're now telling me they can't unlock the it to use with o2!!! They mentioned both not having any record of the phone based on the imei number, and also that because I bought it off ebay it's against company policy.

When asking why I was told it would be ok *before* purchasing all he could do was appologise.

    Any ideas?

Contact trading standards. Contact the company again and get your money back.

I would go to a shop and speak to someone face to face and get the phone you want ang get them to do whatever you want while you are there and don't pay any money untill you are happy with what you have.
