money no object

BBV, Ian Downs from PMC recently told me of a customers £700k home install. There was a hidden small walk in room just for all the Brystons! All PMC's were hidden in the walls too. They had the biggest models, plus a ton of subs to make it really ott. I felt like a big issue selling tramp after hearing about it all.
Sounds like the BBCs big Maida Vale studio.. Awesome.

And I do subscribe to the hifi vs. music debate, though the frantic affirmations or pooh-poohing could all be a question of semantics..
For me, if something sounds "hifi" it reminds me of that horrible "boom'n'tizz" Mission-type sound of the 80s. It doesn't draw you into the music as a whole, just some of the highlighted bits. Kit shouldn't sound like that if it has pretensions to high fidelity, and maybe it doesn't - only to my (quite small) ears..

Oh, and money no object? I'd stick another big Bryston and another pair of Ditton 66/2s wired Hafler-wise on the pre-amp..
And spend the rest on motorbikes, and cake.

MAYBE, but why do the Girls usually deceive us about the amounts of money they spend on Dresses, Shoes and Jewlery?
That is equally flawed. If two people in a supposedly close relationship have to deceive each other about the money they spend on the things they enjoy then how can they possibly be honest with each other about much more important stuff? You might aswell kill such a relationship quickly before wasting any more time on it.

but I hope I've conveyed the gist. I agree, though, that hi-fi should mean faithful to the original.
Agreed. It's unfortunate that the term has become so distorted from its original meaning.

Michael.

I'd have an 8' pair of Quad electrostatics built to special order, and depending on their bass capabilities possibly add a pair of Velodyne 1812s. Add some sensible Sony electronics - a DVD player and a stereo amp - and some wet string for connections and you'd be well away.

yep.

snap.
although my gear looks dear but was not.
my system now is the cheapest i've owned for 20 years.

If money no object I wouldn't change the hifi I'd change the house :) get something with concrete floor and nice solid thick walls, to hang the vinyl player off naturally .

I think we all know bigger/pricier does not always mean "better"!

I bet it sounds ropey. Overwhelms you with the volume of air being pushed, rather than timbre, delicacy, air & decay etc.

I mean, £700k would surely buy you some very good musicians! Just keep 'em in latex, locked in a box till you need 'em :D

DT

My dream system? Dunno really. Jem Blue Pearl TT, VAC Phi 70 Mono's & Acapella Excaliburs have the required wow/bling factor, and would probably make sweet music! Rampant specualtion though. Haven't heard any of these in action :p

Arent blue pearl out of business now? i saw a dem model reduced from 50K to 10K so that must say a lot.

money no object..

probably..

schroeder ref tonearm
allaerts cart
manley steelhead phono

I dont know what CD player I'd have. Possibly a Lindemann. Maybe a Wadia. I dont know. Some listening would need to be done.

A very large room.

2 x 18" velodyne subs.

A very nice projector and hideaway screen.

I think thats all I would do. I'd like to think if I won the lottery I would have better things to worry about - for example which beach I should be lying on.

If it makes you feel better I guess it's easier to say I bet it sounds poor. Yeah right, whatever. I bet those billionaires have a dull time hooning around on their Wally 118, sipping crystal and banging blondes as well. Rather be me. Not :D

money no object..?? maybe an ipod 'cos if I had loads of cash I'd be spending a lot of time travelling the world, not in the house...

if we're talking lottery wins and not just lots of 'vouchers' to spend on hi-fi then my music system would be an archos, some good headphones and a beach in thailand.

What did you think of the sound of the manley steelhead?

purely going by its reputation.

If Im as rich as stink, I can always throw it in the bin and buy something else :)

Titian - In reality I'd love your cart, but feel even 2nd hand it would be beyond my means :)
