I won an auction for an Arcam Alpha 7r amp earlier today.

Before bidding I noticed the seller was listed as cardiff, so I contacted him....

    His reply was "no problem".

My Budget was £100 for an amp, so I ended up bidding £104 thinking I didn't have to consider p+p costs.

I contacted him straight after the auction....

I've not long recieved a reply saying he's just moved to a place just outside Bridgend (works out about 38miles each way). I'm welcome to collect from his house.

Well, I'm informed that's probably about £15 petrol (I don't drive but have a mate's willing to give me a lift).

So, I either pay the petrol costs, or pay for postage (quoted in the auction at £15). Either way that's pushing the price up to the £120 range. MOre than I was willing to pay. £104 was MOre than I wanted to pay, but went for it purely because of the fact he was local and I could collect.

The way I see it, he should either post for free, or ideally reduce the price (to £80?) to cover petrol costs and about 2 hours travelling.

Does that seem fair to ask?

Did you ask him where he lived? If you didn't I don't think you'll get very far.

Have you got a friend with a more economical car?
40mpg = 1 gallon each way = £8 total. Might have to buy him/her a pint or two afterwards I suppose though.....

The auction said Cardiff. I contacted saying I live near Newport so would like to collect.

Its not his problem. You said you wanted to collect. Your quote said nothing about distance/convenience.

    From the auction...

I'm not sure I understand your point of view here.

He's advertised the item as Cardiff. I asked about collection before bidding. He should have said he'd given wrong information on the advert then IMO

It's only 20 miles different. Lots of people put the nearest big city on. I know where Cardiff is I haven't a clue where Bridgend is....

15 quid for 70 miles seems a bit extreme.

How much should I be expecting for petrol? I don't drive.

Fair enough put the nearest big city, but if contacted by someone asking if it's ok collect before they bid, tell them your exact location then?

Cardiff would cost me about £5 return using public transport, or a free lift from someone going there anyway.

    Start address: NP44
    End address: Cardiff
Distance: 18.1 mi (about 35 mins)

    Start address: NP44
End address: Ogmore Vale, Bridgend, CF32
Distance: 38.1 mi (about 1 hour 8 mins)

I refer the honourable gentleman to my previous post:
...of course if you know someone with a modern SDi diesel, you might do the whole journey for £6 of fuel.

£15 is probably right if he's got an old Jag:D

If I was doing a favour for a mate I would not charge him petrol, what goes around comes around.

The same mate gave me a lift on sunday to collect speakers f.o.c

If a mate offers to do me a favour, I offer to cover their costs.

Where do you live gary? Fancy a drive to Bridgend? ;)

It's not my £30 though. I'm buying the kit for my brother.

I think the "problem" will be resolved, he's contated me saying he's willing to drop the postage charges.

    ------------------------------------------------------------

Not your mate??? How can you say that! I thought we were so close! I felt we'd really bonded! Who is he? There's someone else! ISN'T THERE!!!

    Bitch!
