yes it's my annual snow rant.
got up this morning and the walls are suspiciously shiny. look outside and yes it's 3 inches and still going.
not only is it cold, wet and dangerous. this time, for the first time i have to listen to the bloody news in order to find out if my daughters school is closed. not even important national news - local news about john macgregors dog being stuck up a tree and that kind of rot. they did manage to sneak in a paranoia piece about exploding letters though which will keep the neo-cons happy.
global warming? to quote the prophet - 'my arse'

    oh happy fcuking day.

I'll second that. A bit of snow and everything's at a standstill.
Apparently another 10cm on the way down here in london. I'm on the way down to dartford to load a 40 foot container with boxes and furniture after 3 days packing in a nice warm house.
    What a day!
I can't feel my toes already and the day's just begun!

No idea but we could use some snow chains on our truck...the snow's starting to stick on the M25 even though they gritted last night.
    Scary!
I suppose 30mph is the norm on the london orbital though

The world's gone mad! I used to walk to school when the snow was level with the top of my wellies.(this is beginning to sound like a Monty Python sketch), and nobody seems to have a clue how to drive in the stuff nowadays. I just heard on the news that a railway station has been shut because the station steps are too slippy!! FFS, didn't anyone have the gumption to have them salted or gritted.

    nar,
unfortunately i live in a rural area and my daughters school is a good 15 miles away so walkings not an option - even if it was the school is officially closed so there'd be no point.
i agree the country's got an attack of nambyitis with a side order of pc madness. heard on the news this morning that a school in wales had banned mothers day because some pupils didn;t have / live with their mums. whataworld. blood pressure rising - can;t go for bike ride to calm down - where's the chainsaw - must find outlet for rage....

You bunch of moaners, snow's great, especially if you've got kids! Snowmen, snowball fights!! I'm gutted because here in Yeovil all we've got is pissy rain. And if you've got a mountain bike then snows great fun.
Of course, I don't live in London or its environs and I can't imagine it being much fun there in the snow.....or any time come to think of it :D .

about 4 inches here. took my boy into his prep school, 6 miles out in the country - which was a bit hairy but doable, and the school is open. then heard on the radio that the high school near my house in mid town is closed. why the hell do they do this? all the kids live nearby, in town, and can walk to school as they do every day. is it just the teachers being lazy ****s?

anyway, I'll be off sledging in the park today :)

I still managed to ride a motorbikle thru it, about 7 miles.
My boss who is 5 miles away is 'apparently' snowed in

i work from home anyway so no skiving for me today. i suspect that your sons school is quite small with fewer teachers who are more dedicated to their jobs than a huge high school with thousands of pupils and 100+ teachers. easier to close the school than sort out the logistics of a hundred + unsupervised pupils if even 5 teachers cannot make it in.

well I've jsut spent an exellent hour sledging on the park!!

according to one of the mums there, the schools close because of the risk of being sued if someone slips over  . still sounds like a lame excuse to me - the schools who stay open must have sorted out their insurance, so all of them could..
Julian - you're right about the logistics, but I think the dedication remark is the real one - there's such a difference between schools who employ teachers who are on a 'vocation' as opposed to those who are just paying the mortgage..

It is the middle of winter, we live in the UK and it's snowing, it happens every year without fail.
    What's the problem.

I carried on as normal, shorts and T shirt and cycled to work, although I think I may get a pair of trousers and a warmer top if it snows again !

I went through Battersea Park this morning to avoid the traffic, but that was worse as no gritter or had been through !

I suppos thats the way the uk going now - I recall our school was sometimes closed in the '70s - but that was because the water pipes were frozen solid...
