    HelloOoOoOoOoOoOoOoo!!!

I use msn and it's been playing up quite a bit lately, unable to connect, try again later blah blah blah.... Anyone else been having problems?

Other than msn, i've only ever used ICQ, a few years ago. Not sure if it's been brung up to speed, as it seemed quite poor in comparison to msn.

Was thinking of installing another IM thingy, and was wondering what's regarded as best? I've not even seen what yahoo or aol looks like. Freeserve have one too don't they?

Also, anyone know of the program that lets you combine all of them?

I've used Trillian since version 0.635. I've liked it all that time, although some people don't get on with it. It does lack some of the network specific features, but for chat it's good. It allows you to use ICQ without the annoying interface, msn without the screen-filling chat window and brings commonality to all you use.

That's an affirmative - been using it for about three years now, I think, and i couldn't live without it. The only annoying thing is it's damn near impossible to eliminate MSN Messenger from windows.....

Okay, I should've said "damn near impossible for those of us who really can't be bothered trawling the net for hours to find out how." ;)

It's a little complicated  This works for Windows XP Pro - don't know about other flavours:

This will prevent Windows Messenger from ever running but won't eliminate it from your system:

You need to run the Group Policy Editor. To do this Start -> Run and enter gpedit.msc (don't ask!). Now, under Local Computer Policy expand Computer Configuration, then Administrative Templates, then Windows Components.

You'll see a folder/section called Windows Messenger. Click on it. Then for the two settings that appear in the right hand window ("Do not allow Windows Messenger to be run" and "Do automatically start Windows Messenger initially" enable them both by double clicking on them and selection the Enable option.

You may want to do the same thing for the User Configuration but I don't think it's necessary.

Now - getting rid of Windows Messenger alltogether I achieved accidentally :) You can't uninstall it as such but if you install MSN Messenger 6.0 (or later) and then uninstall it you're left with no version of messenger at all :MILD:

EDIT: You probably don't want to mess around with other settings in the GP Editor unless you know what you're doing ;)

No difference really. Windows Messenger is just a version of MSN messenger bundled with Windows (and it's an earlier version).

BTW, you can get rid of Windows Messenger completely (without doing the MSN install/uninstall thing I did) by going to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and then choose Add/Remove Windows Components and deselect Windows Messenger :)
