It still needs some work but this is one of the sites I am going to use a reference site in a job interview.

It is not finished yet and I need to correct any spelling errors etc but the coding is all done. The only bit that isn't complete is the articles section, the articles database content system works fine though.

    Thanks for any comments.

    rather good

Loads fast enough when using 56K.
Good use of fast loading text on opening page while the somewhat slower loading .jpg images load whilst reading the text, no problem with that.
No FLASH slowing things down, very good indeed.
Works with FireBird - what more can you want?

    Re: rather good

Thanks I did think about doing some flash program on the photograph on the front page but then I thought what is the point? To many web developers use flash just to show off with out any regard to the sites users. Its almost considered bad design practise to use flash now unless you are doing an animation such as a cartoon.

I am glad it loads ok on 56K I was a bit worried about that as I have a 512kbps connection.

The spelling mistakes need to correcting. I also need to put more HIFI pictures up, I have tidied my room so I can take some now:)

PS Thanks all for the comments not just Auric

Nice site -- design is nice. You might want to consider pre-loading the rollover images though.

    Slick and restrained - nice!
You could be a little braver and more various with the background colours, and definitely try and blag a copy of Photoshop with it's unbeatable image compression software.
The quotes about your rollovers are relevant: to satisfy all you may want use the alt property of the image tag to at least put up a clickable text label whilst the pretty pictures load. (I just disagree with words being pictures that's all!)
And to be incredibly nitpicky: try and find a really sunny day in Manchester and retake some of them photos! ;) The architecture looks a little 2D in some of them!

As said above. Nice and neat. Perhaps a little too minimal, but nice enough.

If possible I'd not only retake the Manchester pic's but also the HIFI ones. The Manc ones are realistic  in being dull and dark :D (by-eck t'is cold up North), but as said previously, perhaps take them on a nicer day and wait for some nice light. And I'd give the room a good tidy and retake them too :D

    Loaded pretty quick too.

    Good stuff

Piccadilly, and it's Rochdale not Rochaldle! I've come over all addled:D You do need to have a really good search through for spellings and punctuation. It would make me very reluctant to employ someone if they had spelling, or punctuation or even factual mistakes in something they were presenting as a reference or job application. Oxford Road is I believe Europe's busiest bus route not the biggest. A Mancunian employer would almost certainly pick that up!
Be careful of apostrophes, you have quite a lot missing.
It looks great though, am disappointed there was no picture of the City of Manchester Stadium my favourite building in Manchester. :D

It was meant to say busiest and not biggest. I will proof read the site today and try and get most the bugs sorted out. As for images I did them in photoshop but maybe they are not compressed enough. I might try and either make them slightly smaller (then the site will work well in 800*600) and also use slightly heavier compression.

The test was just written in a rush so I could get on with the programming and such. I need to sort it out today. I will take some more pictures of my HIFI today whille my rooms a bit tider. I will probably need to wait till spring to retake some of the Manchester pictures though.
