But how can you be sure it's the band you're listening to and not the recording / mixing engineer of what will make a good record?

Yes let the play button do the biz. Depends on the listeners and their audio preferences. The public profile of respondents to auditions can tell a great deal.  :p :JOEL:

Tis a fair point. :) To be sure, to be sure, I'd guess you'd need to go and get the opinions of the recording engineer and band members. The other is to try out some familiar recordings on your kit (or someone else's), make neccessary changes and see if you like the differences (this can be a subjective judgement). IMO, the distortions caused by the equipment or more specifically by environmental conditions affecting the optimum peformance of the equipment, to my ears at least, usually sound quite different to those "intentionally" introduced to the original recording e.g. recording a guitair through a amp cab which has a ripped speaker. On the otherhand, yes, some recordings are made with very cheap and cheerful production values, but if such recordings sounded (musically) enjoyable at the original recording sessions, then there's no reason why they should also not be equally as enjoyable at home in your own system - I'm not suggesting that everything needs to cleaned up as as you say some recordings are made like that to be taken in as part of the whole expression of the artist message the musicians might want to convey.

It's all right if you like that sort of sound but I don't find it as engaging as the Series 3. Times & tastes change and have probably left me behind :D

Terry is well true, but if the person is serial sceptic to start with, them the result is more valid, and sheep free too :)
