Any recommendations? Anything other than British Gas... Are combined suppliers for gas and electrickery worthwhile?

The story is that I received a letter to a previous occupant of the house about a debt owing. I called them and told them that I was not that person, that they did not live here anymore and that it was nothing to do with me, don't send letters. They said ok.

Today I received another such letter. I phoned them up and told them that this was not acceptable, at which point they came up with some BS about "The letters are generated automatically and can't be stopped. We've nowhere else to send them with no forwarding address so they'll be sent to you". At that point I lost my rag and told them in no uncertain terms that if they did not stop I would switch gas suppliers, to which their response was "Well, that's your choice". And so it shall be....

And a 48 second (including ringing) phone call to the debt collection agency and the letters are stopped. Which makes me all the more determined to switch from British Gits.

Hi - go to www.uswitch.com - this is a free site which points you to the best/cheapest utility companies in your area.

I moved from British Gas to Scottich Power. I get a discount for both gas and electricity, and have paperless billing - just have to fill in meter readings online every three months. I was also fed up with British Gas, however as a final insult they managed to mess up my final bills and wanted to charge me some horrendous amount!! I also went with Powergen in a previous house - had absolutely dreadful customer service.

Yes, powergen supplied my flat with electricity, and they were dreadful.

We're with Efl I think and up to now they've been very good. British Gits tried to get me to pay £780 for two days supply when we moved in. It went to the debt collection agency before it was sorted

To be fair though, BG don't KNOW that you are a new houseowner, just because you tell them on the phone. If they send you some bills for the last owner, just bang them in a postbox with 'return to sender' on them.

If a supplier wanted to get shitty, they could say 'why did you open the post addressed to someone else??' and cause trouble that way..

When something arrives to a previous occupant with no return address on it, it's not very productive to put return to sender on it... By opening it I can inform whoever the sender is that that person no longer lives here. Unless they choose to ignore me and then give me some BS about not being able to stop what they can stop.

Of course, it is their loss. I'm 23 now, so there's another 60 years or so in which I'll be buying gas, and now it will never be from them again.

Isaac it depends on how much gas, electricity you use. For me the best deal was Npower, i have never had any problems with them, others i know say the opposite.

npower current deal is £50 credit after 12 months of paying both elec + gas by direct debit. single supply i.e. just gas or elec gives £10 credit after 12 months. that £50 makes them the cheapest 4 me
dont get 5 * out of 5 though. they set up my gas dd straight away, and elec is starting in august, i had to pay 1st two months manually. god only knows y, same acc details

After running through uswitch, I've placed an order with Edf (in the guise of SWEB) for a combined gas/electrickery deal. Let's see how it goes.
