just found some of the Acoustic Energy Aesprit 301 for B-grade (as in slight scratch or whatever..."used for demonstrations") £39.99 a pair. but they are part of a 5.1 surround sound system? also "recommended with the 308 subwoofer" meaning it doesn't actually have a good bass?

No it doesn't mean that. Most domestic speakers only go down to around 40 Hz, some to 35 Hz. There are no affordable ones that go all the way down to 20 Hz. This is what a subwoofer is for. It is a specialised speaker with it's own built in amplifier which covers the frequency band from 20 Hz to 40 Hz or so. Actually only good subwoofers get down to 20 Hz and many cheap ones don't get anywhere near. These can still be useful for adding impact to movies but are useless for music.

The Aesprits will be fine on their own to begin with and you can add a sub for that last bit of floor shaking depth later on. Curiously subwoofers often have a big effect on sound quality in the midrange and treble regions. Opinions are divided on why this should be but it definitely happens. Maybe something to do with more accurately reproducing the acoustic of the recording venue - something which is more felt than heard.

well, a full 5.1 system has a subwoofer by default - its 2 front speakers, 2 back, 1 centre channel for voice and a sub.

I'm sure they'd have ample bass for a small room, but perhaps Rory can tell you that better.

You could start a fresh thread - whats the best standmount speaker for £150? - you might get some extra ideas.

    Just a few thoughts.

    NB
You cant go far wrong for 39.99!!

chris you beat me to it! :D

yeah, you could always add a sub later, but decent subs cost £250+ even second hand, beyond budgets at the minute I'd say.

i would start a thread, but im off on holiday in aprox 3 minutes, and those £39.99 end after july.
