Okay. So I've got a 12 yr old Planar 3 and I've been looking at tweaking it but it seems like the cost of replacing the arm and motor take me up to the price of a new table. What should I be looking at ? I'd consider a P5 (can't afford a P9 and don't like the look of the P7 - just aesthetics) but there must be alternatives.

Say, £1000 including the arm. Not a penny more and pref not 2nd hand.

Although in theory I could canibalise the RB300 from the P3.

Give me your wisdom !

Michell Gyro SE/TecnoDec and keep the RB300.

Either will beat the top project or a gyro IMHO. You can use your existing rb300 or sell the whole rega and buy the funk V / rb300 / denon at a package price of under a thousand pounds.

Vpi Scout. You should be able to buy a new one for £800 and it will comfortably see off any of the above mentioned IMO as the JMW9 arm is in another class.

You can of course attach something like a tecno arm or the roksan nima to send the vpi scurrying for cover ;)

Roksan Radius 5 (acrylic), comes with the fantastic nima arm - fit a quality cartridge of your choosing (I have a Grado prestige gold on mine) and sit back and enjoy...

The Vpi was preferred in my system to an Orbe/Technoarm combination. The Nima might well be interesting. The build does not compare favourably however. Have you auditioned the Vpi BB?
