I bought a £40 Cambridge Audio phono stage and sent it off to Zanash who totally re-designed it including making up a much better external PSU rather than the wall-wart type they supply.

    Works really well.

Can you show some pictures of the Cambridge Audio phono stage that Zanash has modified? It looks like a very well designed phono stage by looking at the inside, but I haven't had a chance to listen to one.

I have a rather scruffy old DPA 200S phono stage (basically same one as in the 50 or 100S pre's but in it's own box. It's very impressive. Cost - new about £500 I think, best £250 I ever spent!

    That LCR phono looks fantastic.

The quad phonostage doesn't seem too bad a deal if you have bought into the rest of the quad system. It can be a cheap to produce but you are buying the brand and the phonostage fits nicely into the quad system. If quad brough out a budget amp and pre then a budget phono would follow. So there is no need for them to have a lower priced product as the £1K phono will sell very nicely.

There are lots of other more expensive phonostages that can possibly argued not very good. But we don't know unless we try. For all i know the Quad phono could be a killer product.

Best phono i have heard around that price tag is the Anatek MC1.

I think it could be the bechmark.

ta. i'm very happy with them. mate who i got them from works at KEF had them upgraded with a new crossover kit, so they have the treble boost/cut and bass cut/boost set up that the new ones have.

So I guess the 3 year old Kondo KSL-M7 Phono stage I've seen for sale at £6000 isn't a bargain after all :( ;)
