Saw this last night. Really good! I know its from '98 so I'm a bit late watching it lol.

The main thing i liked was the soundtrack, and being black and white it really makes the soundtrack a more prominent part of the film. Some parts reminded me a lot of the old metropolis film. Not the one with music by Queen but the other one... I don't know who did the music but some was really scary!

Clint Mansell did the sound for Pi, and also The Fountain which I saw and made me look for Pi. Really good stuff. Some Drum and bass too!

The story is about a mathematician looking for patterns in the stock market. His mentor used to look for patterns in Pi. Weird stuff starts happening and he starts to go insane at the same time. He apparently stared into the sun as a kid and has since had really bad migraines.

Anybody else seen it, what did you think?

You need to see Requiem for a dream....Aronofsky's other movie. It outshines both these movies by an easy mile. If you have a good surround system you are in for a treat with 'Requiem for A Dream'.

I loaned it to a mate and his wife phoned to say 'Don't ever fucking give my husband anything like that again you bastard.......he hasn't stopped crying for three days' I replied 'RESULT'

You need to see it....truly a harrowing experience.

I am downloading it now.

No I'm not as naughty as it would seem because I also just bought it on Amazon for my brothers birthday!

I figured you would have seen it Nick, what with all the weird films to go to see ;) It did make me think of you, watching him staring at the stock report display trying to see a pattern.

don't drill yourself in the head, okay! :JOEL:

I saw Requiem for a Dream today. I can't say I liked it that much. I thought it was rather boring to begin with and then in the last 3rd just became disturbing more than anything. Maybe it would appeal to someone who has been stuck on drugs in their past and can relate or something.. I dunno.

Two things also annoyed me about it. First, why the hell didn't they do a tox screen on the old lady and find she had narcotics in her? Second, when the other doctor saw Harry had an infected arm, did he not help him? I know they can refuse to treat addicts, but I don't think any doctor would ignore someone in dire need of medical help.

The music was good, of course.

Pi is much better though :)

He didn't ignore it - it was already too late. At that point the delay was in waiting for the chop.

I think the point is people dont care in the USA health system. Go and rent "sicko" to get the lowdown.

Really? I got the impression he only got the attention he needed (amputation!) after being too ill to work in prison. Otherwise they were just ignoring him.

I think you are right, since all the doctors in the film were bastards. That was no doubt the bigger point.

I'll have a look for sicko, though I'm not sure it sounds like my kinda thing! Is it anything like House? I like that!

In the film , maybe; but I strongly recommend you try reading the Hubert Selby Jr. book it was based on.

Written in the mid-60s (along with the companion Last Exit to Brooklyn) Selby's writing is full of an astonishing moral outrage that defies direct translation to the screen - especially 30years later when social mores have changed so much. You may find the writing style dated, but the subject matter is timeless and succintly explored even if the presentation was deliberately made harrowing.
