I've just upgraded the meMOry in this pc from 192MB (128 & 64 SDRAM) to 2 x 256MB

Despite reading mixed information which MOstly said my MObo would only take a max of 256 (2 x 128), all seems fine :)

So, I planed on putting the 192 into another even older PC which we have lying around. However, I've just opened it up for a look and it has 4 (full) banks labeled SIMM 1 - 4 and 2 empty DIMM banks.

Will it be ok to put the 192 into the DIMM banks? Or do i need to reMOve the 4 MOdules from the SIMMs too?

4 SIMM banks full and still only 32MB!

I'd removre the SIMMS first. Motherboards that had a mix of SIMM and DIMM sockets did so mainly to ease the transition to a newer processor, whilst still keeping existing memory.

With a mixture of SIMMs and DIMMs, at best, the motherboard simply won't POST (Power On Self Test), at the worst, you could end up frying either the board or the RAM or even both.

I second the Crucial rec. Free delivery, lifetime warranty, help selecting the right memory and as cheap as the equivalent memory from elsewhere.

Thanks for the replies.

I've used the Crucial scanner on this PC and it worked well, however, the other one is even MOre ancient and isn't online (it's pretty much just used for ms word), so I can't use it on that.

I took the SIMMs out and put in the DIMMs and it worked ok. However, It's only showing each as 32MB. Is that a fixed limit? or is there a setting somewhere I can change to get it to recognize the entire installed meMOry?

MO, u need to work out what the motherboard is exactly, and then research that on the interweb - the manual / manufacturer's website should tell you the compatible memory type etc etc.
there may also be a bios update available (depending on who made it) that might resolve your problem.

This might help.

Dude,
could you not download belarc.com free download and burn to cd then install it on the pc that is not connected to the net? This will give you a few ideas about what is in you old laptop and then with make and MB details you could poke this info in to crucial (on the net connected machine) and see what it recomends for the one you are trying to upgrade.
