The advantage with the Prefix is that it takes out a lot of arm lead. You would be very surprised at how much noise this cuts out.

The lead that carries the signal from the cartridge.

Loricraft Missing Link. Superb stage for reasonable money. May have to wait a bit, though.

how does it take out a lot of arm lead? surely you still need it to be long enough to reach the prefix...?

Well, obviously you can't do away with the bit of arm lead that runs within the arm itself, and connects to the Prefix.

But you can do away with the bit of arm lead which comes out of the back of the record player and connects to the amplifier or external phono stage.

    Is it wireless?
I've got a set of phono plugs on the end of my tonearm which are connected to the phono stage by Clearaudio Trident interconnect, so not exactly the bell wire that would normally be inside an arm!
Does the Prefix connect directly to the arm phonos?

Leonard, the Prefix is a phono stage that is meant to be mounted inside a turntable, usually a Linn LP12, directly under the arm board. The low-level signals from the cartridge are amplified at the earliest practical opportunity (although some enterprising souls have experimented with a head amp inside or on top of the arm headshell).

Naturally, you then need a line-level ic to the preamp.

No to really get the benefit you'd need a bouncy Glaswegian coffin.

The Prefix is compatible with many record players.

To be fair the Naim isn't the only stage you could mount close to the arm. The Ear isn't exactly huge, wouldn't fit inside an LP12 but you could mount it close on plinthless tables. If you took some of the michel/Evans stuff out of the boxes they'd probably work too. If you could be arsed anyway.

You could get the VPI one for US$200 but you probably already knew that... I am using a normal interconnect at the moment and don't get any inteference, induction etc... Don't know what benefit the shielded cable would be... Oh, and cardas also do phonos and Russ Andrews if you're desperate.

Penance: I was hoping someone more knowledgable would come answer that. Did a cursory search on the net but couldn't find the exact figures and it doesn't come with a manual. One would think it's 47 kOhm. Input Voltage is 2.2 mV for MM version (on the website).

blakeaudio: You can get the VPI cable on www.elusivedisc.com.
