Have interesting comments on another forum so thought I'd see what you thought:

"I've been mulling over getting a turntable for a few months now. Bearing in mind that I'm new to vinyl, I've shortlisted these four to get started:

Project 2 xperience with Project 9c arm and NOS Grado "GF3 super" cart for £380 (why is this better than the rpm6?) (?add £20-£30 p&p)
Rega p3 with Rega rb300 arm and Denon DL110 MC cart for £380
2nd hand Linn LP12 (recently serviced) with Linn Basic arm and ?no cart for £395
Thorens TD166 (recently re-plinthed) with sme 3009 arm and shure cart for £170ish inc p&p

Whadayarekn?

Anything else I should shortlist? My limit is about £400, but if I can get away with closer to the £300 mark, that'll be great.

Thanx for any help......Gaffer

PS Definitely want detail, clarity and the ability to ROCK when needed (ideally want a vinyl version of the PR&T of the naim cd5i in my primary system). My original budget was close to £600, so i had michell technodec and nottingham horizan as well as clearaudio emotion on list, but budget had to come down (bloody mortgage shenanigans  ) so have settled on £400 at a scrape. With my primary system, i feel that any lower would not be a SQ match with the rest of the kit, I want something that will hold up well to CD on the naim at a minimum.

PPS I'm starting from scratch, so I haven't got a phono stage, but I'll get to that bridge later (after I've got the cart, so I know what type i need). So £400 should include deck, arm and cart."

Cheers for any thoughts.

A rebuilt 160bc or super will give many top TT a run. The166 would have come fitted with thorens own arm and a load of extra bit to operate it. £009 arm is not the best sme ever made !

LP12 not my cup of tea

regas and projects good....but you need to spend a bit on TT suports. The suspended types will reduce the need [ not eliminate it].

Ifyou can find a SH Logic DM10-1 mkII, or even tempo or a Alphason models....these really rock...[and have some degree of prat].

my standard reccomendation sub £500 is a used nottingham analogue interspace.

it sounds great, is unlikely to have damage (there isnt any suspension to damage!), can be upgraded with heavier platters and power supplies, and often comes with a rega arm for about £400-£450.

If I couldnt have a NAS interspace, I'd get lorricraft to do me up a garrard with a rega arm for less than £500.

For your budget I'd say:

Technics SL-1200 et al (Yes, the "DJ" Turntable")

DIY Suspension Platform using multiple squashballs (yellow-dot) and 1" MDF or slate for the top

Denon DL-103 Cartridge

Project Glass Platter Mat

External re-wiring of the arm using suitable Wire, from simple enameled copper wire to van den hul litz-silver.

You can pull that off on budget and as system it will be a much better table than any of the supposedly "HiFi" tables at that budget point.

Ciao T

Any one know where I can get my old Sansui direct drive TT arm ripped out and modded with a new one? I'm currently thinking sme or hadcock?

Oh a a real nice pro job would be needed as the deck is a bit of a stunner!

thanx everyone, coupled with answers from other forums, i'm currrently trying to demo some fixed chassis designs and am looking into the project 2xperience option.
