mrsjohnh was given little yucca a few years back. It's now roughly seven foot tall. I wondered if anyone here knew about how to prune them or whether we can stick it in the garden.
I understand that they quite like being outside in the summer but worry about the size of it after a couple of months in the ever hotter london summer.

You can just cut them down to size!

If you cut the woody parts of the stems into 1Ft lengths you'll find you can get them to root on their own in potting compost, giving you 3 or 4 new yuccas - and the original (leave say 4" stubs of the stems you've removed). Did this to mine about 6 years ago, all growing healthily, the original plant is back up to abut 5feet high though...

A frost will kill them, but if you've a very shelterered area close to the house, yes they can live outside.

I know it's not the size of it but what you do with it that counts, but my Yucca's no bigger than it was 8 years ago. What am I doing wrong? It's very leafy though. Around 2.5' high and in a 10" diameter pot.

My mother in law lives down on the south coast of England, in Fareham, Hants.

She has a Yucca tree in her (small and sheltered) back garden that is massive, the trunk must be a good 12 - 15" in diameter. It has been growning there for years and i'm sure that she doesn't give it any special attention at all.

    Dose size matter?

You will find that bonsai yuccas are very trendy just now.

AH, but I'm getting a bit of Yucca envy here now. I mean, hey, where'd I go wrong*?

    * or is it something to do with varietal differences?

    could be a varietal difference.

it's spent all of it's life inside but always in very lit areas and i think that's the key.

we water it occaisionally and as far as i remember it's never been fed and lives in a pot that is clearly too small. Must do something about that
