You could try one of the NOS Dacs on the CD. They have a very different presentation. Or try the Cambridge CD players. They're very good indeed.

    Indeed not.

A very individual drawing, David, and everyone will draw it in a different place. My method is simple: (a) find something that makes an agreeable noise, (b) keep it, and (c) don't go out of your way to improve on it. Which, I guess, eliminates me from the ranks of the hobbyists.

Absolutely, ol' spud - to take or to leave, as is your individual wont, and regardless of what anyone else thinks.

I use 5m runs in my lounge. Ubyte-2 cable

    http://www.tnt-audio.com/clinica/ubyte2e.html

I bought a drum of the HT-100 cable for various uses and excellent it is too.

I made up 10M runs for a friends AV system and of course could not resist trying it in my system.
Sounded good. No discernable difference to my 5m runs.

I have tried a few different cables and none beat Ubyte-2 for my 5m runs. The extra detail and speed were noticeable.

This type of cable, not only being OFC copper probably is capable of shooting a complex AC signal with 0-50V odd volts over a longer distance much better than a simple wire pair.

HT100 is pretty cheap on Ebay.

YOu sound very similar to my brother, who enjoys music after a hard day at the office.

    S'ok, horses for courses.

(I did impress him with my cones +BBs at xmas though :D).

I wouldn't go so far as to say that.

I know you knowledge on the subject is formidable.....I wish I had a fraction of it :).

    Quite

Almost - all my office days are hard and long and it takes me 2 hours to get home. Listening is done at the weekends.

Thank you, but clearly you have a different Tones in mind. I am merely a hi-fi ignoramus with a serious Bach fixation.

I tried a beresford dac (I considered this very good for the money) but it didn't cut the mustard after a while. The meridian sounds good, i just want more of it???

It sounds like you want to make a real improvement in an excellent basic system for £100.

Really, I think you have to spend more to see anything major and would reccomend....

    1) bottle of wine
    2) a packet of new strings for your guitar
    3) a meal out with the good lady
    4) a couple of great records
