Just done the test despite the warnings it is crap.

I am apparantly an alchoholic so I better start hiding white lightening bottles under the bath now :).

That questionaire really really annoys me, my dad is an alcholic and it totaly misses the point.

Surely an alchoholic is somebody who has a problem with alchohol miss use? Somebody who drinks a lot at weekends is not an alchoholic unless they have problems stopping or drinking less - this is the ultimate test.

Maybe I do have an alchohol problem, but if I do it is a very minor one. I must also be a burgerholic and a chipoholic.

Yep the forum I moderate on is very very strict but that is a word we allow.

It is about the only swear word we allow though.

But then a student site which bans the P word is pretty much useless :D

Well, yes, the test is a bad one. As far as I know, the true test for alcoholism is that one physically needs alcohol to get going (functional alcoholism) and that once one starts to drink one cannot stop.

Even so, many of the questions address important aspects of alcoholism. It is important to stress that many people in our society are, in fact, dependent on alcohol much more than they think. For instance, in either the UK and the US people used to have several drinks a day, just for stress.

There are people who can cope with that and are of such robust constitution that they get away with it. Others don't and real problems may occur.

So while I am not defending the test, I should say that if one needs a drink to get going, if one definitely craves (not just wants) for a drink, if one gets tipsy more than once a week, one should be aware that one may have a problem.

I used to be a regular drinker. I am almost a teetotaler now: I only drink socially and even that very seldom and very cautiously.

I know two functional alcoholics and one dependent alcoholic. It is horrid to see: he cannot do anything, he just drinks himself do death every night. He was quite a brilliant fellow. Nowadays he is just a wreck. The functional alcoholics are less frightening. Indeed, one may not notice anything wrong.

That said, this made me thirsty: I'm getting a beer :)
