    Merlin,

It would be a fine crack up job, except at the time I had the GR 20's :)
I realise the shearwaters are only average, but you've got to start some where, as I'm at the bottom of the ladder, I can always improve, and thats what I hoping I can achieve given my basic set up :)
So please bear (grizzy) with me while I struggle to polish those not so gleeming turds mate. Besides I only listen to unintellectual music, so surely they can do no harm, they're awful inaccuracies & uncouthiness can be forgiven as they can thwack for little money. please oh wise caster of mystical enchantments, spare me some more magic dust :)

Tony, no amount of online 'running down' of my system, and/or 'talking up' of your own system will change anything. Alex has cloth ears, btw. ;-)

FWIW James for a Naim-ish system yours is pretty good, best I have heard, but prefer my own, of course we are talking in degrees here, I'm sure everyone has a fabulous sounding setup, and we'ed all be happy with any of them, but I s'pose we all prefer our own, James' setup does the transaprency and immediacy well enougfh for my tatse does the grunt and drive stuff too, but aint quite fast enough or 3d enough for my tatses, still gonna enjoy a few choons tonight, andd the only distortion I'm gonna hear is that deliberately introduced by James to let me hear the difference.

    Pardon?

Are you ever going to come up and hear the ATCs, btw? I'd really like Jason to hear them too.

That's a great get-out clause. We could always just go to the pub instead.

James, my get-out clause is Glasgow! If you still practiced your inestimable physicianship at Guys I'd visit twice a week.

Those bass units look suspiciously like ATC ones to me.
Someone who knows please correct me.
The reason ATC are so good, and there is no doubt they are, is they use huge magnets, it means the cones have to be heavy, which also aids break up. The magnets have carefully designed distortion characteristics. And the coils too, coupled with massive build, and 350 watts of top quality mosfet amps, and active crossovers, all connected to the drive units by cheap pvc copper cable. See cables don't matter, its the basic ingredients :D All for £3k s/h. for a 12" 3 way with world class bass and mid units. Not bad eh? Labour of love.

Ian they may well be ATC bass, all the specs say is modified PA driver, the other driver is 8" Velvet Kevlar and milled chassis, tweeter is soft dome with flared horn, again milled. similar to ATC in the use of large powerfull magnets, and Velvet kevlar supposed to be one of the most inert cone materials available to lessen any colouration. Again not knocking any other speeks, just feel that ART speakers are good enough for a plug, and they would surprise a few of you. As James says, he prefers ATC, I prefer the ART's although the demo room in shop were we both heard them does not allways do things justice and still they didn't sound bad. The room were I heard them is huge and they still manged to sound special.

FWIW Glasgow is one of the finest cities in the UK, but then I'm biased.

I was never impressed by the 107s. They always sounded dullish and bass heavy to me. Not very extended either. Admittedly I've only ever heard them at shows, but at least shows give you an indication of the basic balance of speakers and systems as you walk from room to room.

It's never ceased to amaze me the kind of systems that some people think sound good judging by the comments in some manufacturers demo rooms.

B&W 801 Matrix impressed me a lot more than the 107, and I had 104.2
