DIY Subs

This is actually a very simple transmission line, Dev, and dead easy to make. The speaker resides in the middle and there are two transmission lines going to exit ports at the base of each of the narrrow sides. Each transmission line is simply defined by a single partition that reaches from the base almost to the top of the enclosure. Thus, the sound goes up the enclosure, round the partition and then down to the exit ports. Couldn't be simpler.

I ended up mounting the amplifier module in a separate box, so that I could adjust it along with the volume for the rest of the gear.

Hi Tones

It does look very slim for a sub, as you mentioned in that thread, you could hang it on the wall. However, I feel that a sub must go very low (20Hz minimum, though I've seen some larger kits advertised for 10Hz). For a sealed box this may be very difficult but I think the response should be faster to make up for a relative lack of extension.

This is movies, for music I've not felt the need for a sub specially with Classical music. This could of course change once I listen Rock and Bhangra music with a good sub.

BTW, the first link doesn't work. I assume this is where the picture of your actual sub is.

No, the second - look for CT ("Cheap Trick") 198. And in your consideration of bass, don't forget that what's reproducible will be governed by the size of your room.

My REL Storm III is flat to 22 Hz and still going strong at 18 Hz.
And it does have a significant effect on music, especially in the midrange and in the reproduction of the acoustic of the recording venue. It adds a sense of space and makes the music more clearly defined.

Hi Chris,

Why r u selling ur REL? I'm just curious/nosey.
I was going to ask the very same... :)

BTW Chris - what's happened to your ad in the Buy/Sell section - it seems to have mysteriously disappeared - did you have second thoughts?

I'm wavering. On the one hand it does improve the sound and I can tell when it's not on. On the other hand it's taking up a space which I want to use for other purposes.

It doesn't have as big an effect with the Castles as it did with the Mission 773e's. The Castles go much louder and a fair bit deeper than the Missions could.

The reason I wavered is that I am in the process of building a Home Theatre PC and when that's finished, I'll be able to play DVDs and a sub will be more useful then.

Yeah, we should all know that by now, as Chris likes to remind us in his signature, he's not into cross-dressers! :p

:D
