Yes Robert...I have considered the weight of fuel I lug around as I tend to fill her up and forget about it for 2 weeks. Its a factor I'm sure but in the end I prefer going to the garage less regularly! Plus, does it work out cheaper as I'm running on cheaper fuel at some points when Ipurchase before a price rise!?

Narabdela...those common rail diesels are supposed to be alot more efficient than the norm so I guess 60 is achievable with tidy driving. I think my dads renault diesel was doing up towards 70mpg on a long run and thats was an estate. Thinking about it, with any modern diesel it should be possible to get alot of miles per tank I'd have thought.

eg engine breaking?

any sort of a hill and mines into the next gear down.

YOu don't know if you breaks are goign to pack up....and it saves on brake wear anyway....

I just fill it up!

Factor in you time filling up more frequenlty, doing it every half tank!

It comes around quickly enough as it is.

Maybe its the common rail diesels that are doing these mileages.

The engine in my transit is esentially the same unit as was in my escort....with an intercooler on.
 
It's all been covered really - maintain speed in traffic by leaving bigger gaps and avoid the brakes (the quickest way to drop mpg), keep in gear and off throttle down hills, keep speeds slightly lower. Quick acceleration isn't so bad because it gets you up to a more efficient cruise sooner.

I managed 50mpg out of my 2.4 petrol estate once. Before you call shenanigans, I will admit it was carefully cherry-picked: drive from one petrol station to another 140 miles away, with warmed up engine and keeping the engine in lean-burn mode (it's a mitstubishi GDI direct-injection lean-burn engine). Average over 10000 miles so far has been 33.3 mpg (calculated from the fuel put in, not a computer reading).
