Glad you are sorted - your own little piece of freedom.

Insurance, get quotes for both. Years ago 3rd party used to be a lot cheaper, but now there are a lot less insurers offering 3rd party policies, so when the broker does the sweep, it will be over a much smaller number of offerings. For this reason, sometimes a fully comp policy can actually be cheaper than the 3rd party!! (Or only a little more).

3rd party cover being extended to any vehicle you drive that is not owned by you used to be standard on all comprehensive policies, it isn't anymore. Although it is usually on the policy, worth checking if it is something you want as in recent years, it is no longer always standard and a few have been caught out when they assumed they were covered and weren't.

If you are a low mileage user, tell them - you can often get discount if you are only doing 5,000 or 7,500 miles a year.

Also some give discount for physical theft deterants such as the disklock - again, worth asking - if they do, it can be worth buying (and using!) the lock just for the insurance reduction.

I know you have said not worth a lot, but older cars are attractive to kids who just want to blast about in something as they are generally easier to get into and don't have fancy alarms fitted.

Finally - be careful but enjoy!

yes Samantha's commnts on insurance are my exxperinece too

i think the policies hae changed somewhat since isarted.....so comp is not the big issue it once was

watch your excess......that normally put you off making too any small claims (sorry don't mean to be neg but ithought it just worth putting in) .....a bigger excess can reduce your policy

Ads Samantha says they like to hear about garages....locks.....alarms etc etc

if you drive a va n for work.....they shoiuld insure you.

After coming close to brain melt down I went with ecarinsurance. Consistantly cheapest when searching for quotes on confused.com

Fully comp with £100 voluntary excess on top of their basic £50. £501 for the year.

Need to wait for that to go through and then tax.....

tho, I'm not sure if this is an issue these days - as I got stopped by the cops a few years ago and you normally have to produce your documents to the local police station within 14/28 days...

plus, is it a good idea to keep the documents in there when you're not there and your motor gets nicked?

The only thing I have is one A4 sheet.

    It's perferated into 4 sections

V5C/3, "Notification of Sale/Transfer to the motor trade/insurer/dismantler"

    V5C/2 "New keeper supplement"

    V5C/4, "Notification of permanent export"

And the bottom section with the header "Selling your vehicle privately."

We both signed something and I wrote my address down. Didn't really know what I was doing so just did as he instructed. I'm clever like that :D

Other than that one sheet of A4, all I have is the MOT certificate. Should I have more?

Do I need to send anything off or such?

Right..... between the rain I've managed to give it a bit of a looking over. The body work seems fine. A few small scratches, but looks rather good to me. No real rust, and the paint work is good. The interior is ok, bit worn in places and could do with a hoover. There's seat covers on it (nicer than the actual seating material anyhow), which the seller did tell me were to cover a rip in one of the seats. I'll get them off for a proper look later.

    Problems I've noticed so far....

My dad drove it back from Bristol. We followed and noticed that although all the lights work, they indicators are a bit iffy on one side. Not very clear.
He also said that the temp gage didn't move at all. Not that it was justkeeping cold, but didn't seem connected. Hopefully just a sensor or something, and not the sign of something else???

The button doo da on the key opens and closes the doors ok, but the key itself only seems to work in the passanger door. Put it in and turn it and both doors open and close, but it's not doing anything when the key is turned in the drivers side.

Can't get the boot to lock with either the key or the button thingy! Can hear a sound in the boot when using the button, as if the boot is trying to lock.... but it doesn't.

Passenger side front window. Electric. Goes down fine, but when closing it's slow and wont close the final inch. Need to use hands to help push it up.

I'd like to put it in for a once over, but worried if they'll cancel the MOTor such. Is that possible or likely?

How much would it cost for a check over?

    Yes ,I know mr.C.....

....bt if thee is an issue over 35mph in a 30.......and an sp30 hangs in the balance.....if you have to bring stuff to the local nick it mean they have to give you three points....and fine...

If OTOH you have your docs in the motor to show them.....if its minor and you are creepy crawly enough.....they may just give you a ticking off.

....wel thats what i was told.

YOur v5 is the important one.

    Ins+mot not a show stopper

I was told to keep them in the car

    update....

The car had been on the drive for two days.

About 2am and we'd just started to drift off to sleep when I heard some voices outside. We live in a quiet close, so any noise tends to draw attention. I looked out the window and seen a guy outside.... and another guy climbing in the passenger side door of my car!!!

My girlfriend thought I was joking, but as soon as she turned the lamp on we heard them start to run away. I sleep naked, and wasn't in the mood for letting them get away so set off after them..... but naked! After about 50 meters or so I realised there were two of them, and one naked me. So decided to shout after them "YEAH YOU BETTER F@#KING RUN!!!". If they'd bothered to look back, I'm sure they'd have agreed lol!

No damage done and don't imagine they'll be back.

The stereo is meant to be a face off.... but I can't get the face off! I'm assuming that's what they were after. I've bought a steering lock for now and reversing it up the drive so the boot is close enough to the wall so they can't get it in that way.

Any idea how I go about changing the lock on the boot?
