Is your 330d sport manual or auto ?

We have a 330d sport touring auto (the 204 bhp engine also). According to the computer we get 34.4 mpg at an average of 33mph. It was bought as a dog carrier to replace my Audi S3 - that used to do 27mpg. First diesel car and I am very pleased with it, after 20,000 miles in 14 months.

Average about 50 mpg in my Astra 1.7d although its slow as dogs. Most of that is open road driving as theres not much urban around here.

by the way do some of you have displays that tell you your mpg as you're going along?

Hands up the SUV drivers....... http://www.wastemonsters.org.uk/

I think more and more cars are coming with trip computers now - my sister just bought a lowly 1.2 Clio and that even has one. How accurate they are though, I don't know!

The Tones' 1994 Astra Caravan (1.6) routinely gets from 35-38mpg in our usual mix of city/country/Autobahn driving. The lowest ever was 32mpg, and in an Autobahn-only excursion from Basel to Vienna we got nearly 47mpg. I once dreamt of 50mpg, but this is out of the question, barring extreme economy driving tricks.

Yes, be interesting to compare against your own measurements. I wonder if they add a few mpg to make you feel better.

Yes the box and the TT both have/had mpg displays (trip computers) although the gf's 7 year old basic 1l yaris also has one dont know why though because it seems to run on air ;) but I miss the loud pedal too much :JOEL:

My M3 trip computer shows you the average fuel consumption (in MPG or l/100km) since the last time you did a reset and it's pretty spot on. It's a pity it doesn't have an instantaneous consumption readout allthough most BMWs have this as a gauge below the rev counter anyway (in "M" cars this is replaced by an oil temp gauge).

special k, the BMW 330d manual has significantly better consumption than the auto - something like 10-20% less fuel used (same goes for the 320d).

Whilst I have some sympathy for the anti 4x4 movement it should be done sensibly. Why target 4x4s in particular? There are people carriers, big Mercs etc. etc. which used just as much space on the road and use just as much fuel (often a lot more).

I test drove the m3 and TVR 350c when I bought the box and have to say losing that stupid BMW needle gauge is a good thing IMO. Loved the streight line performance and the noise of the m3. The TVR was the most fun, best looking, noisyest and fastest but its unreliability was an issue and as for its depreciation  they were £6-7k down after only 6 months, I just can't afford to lose that kind of money. I will look at them again next year though, I would only buy one second hand although I guess porsche will be the sensible buy again  if you can call a porsche sensible

I think its due to the safety issues that go along with the 4x4's as much as the fuel issue. Don't know how they compare with the people carriers though.

    Hi Michael,

I have been reading about your deliberations over what car to get next on the BMW Magazine car forum. So, you decided to go for the 320d instead of the 5 series.

I thought that it was you posting on that forum and this one as well.

Enjoy your new car when you get it.

    Regards

    Adam

A mate of mine has a Cayenne (entry model) and he gets... 16mpg however for a huge 4x4 its handling is fantastic. He is single with no kids

51 plate E320CDI (200'ish BHP, 400'ish lb ft Torque I think) 65ltr tank - avg fuel consumption 38.6mpg on the trip computer.

Have had 44mpg on m/way in grandad mode - but 85mph cruising feels more like progress. Can dip to mid teens mpg round town if driven enthusiasticly :JPS:

Wow - didn't think there'd be any member overlap from the BMW Car Mag forum and this one...

Yes, decided to go with the 3 series touring rather than the 5. I just like the look of the 3 a lot more and the 5 is just too big for me, not to mention more expensive to run. I have someone very interested in my M3 so with any luck it will be sold this week and I can go on the hunt for a used 320d touring :)

What's your nick on the BMW forum?

    Michael.

I don't think they're that useful though. Mine jumps from around 200 mpg to 5 mpg over the space of a 12 mile journey to work!

Yes, I did a bit of a double-take when I realised that you were posting on the BMW forum and also the owner of this site.

I post under the name of davisa1 on the BMW forum (that name was my logon-id when I first started work 11 years ago).

Good luck with selling the M3 and your hunt for a 320d. Must have been hard to reach that decision, but I can understand why you are doing it.

When I bought my E46 I could have bought a used E36 M3, but the running/servicing costs frightened me off.

    Regards

It's a manual Graham - six speed so should be excellent on a long motorway run - it has enough torque to pull away in 6th too. I would have hapilly gone for an auto and taken the approx 6mpg penalty, however, a manual one came up at a very good price with some great options (Harmon Kardon, Xenons) and I couldn't refuse.

I did see an auto with a few less miles (15K instead of 21K) but it was £1500 dearer and didn't have said options.
