Greatest song ever written

Yep its one one of their albums, it might be the Man Who I think. It really dosn't sound anything like as good as the Band version and considering that was recorded on late 60's technology its a good tribute to the original by the band.

Thats a brillaint song, and prefer the Band's version to the one Travis did. One of Dylan's better songs.

Ehr.. sorry for stirring this up, but this masterpiece was written by Robbie Robbertson. Dylan wrote I shall be released which also features on 'Music from Big Pink'.

Other favorites:

Joy Divison - Ceremony (yes AT, that 'demo' version indeed)
Stevie Wonder - He's mistra knowing it all
Jimmy Ruffin - What becomes of the broken hearted
River deep, Mountain High - Ike and Tina Turner
Prince - I could never take the place of your man

.. and so on of course.

Did anyone see the Rolling Stone article regarding GSEW apparently its:
Like a rolling stone by Bob Dylan.
Satisfaction by the Stones 2nd
Imagine by Lennon 3rd

Mmmm Im sure we can do better than that

The best song ever written is, without doubt, 'Waterloo Sunset' by the Kinks.

mmm. too many too choose from, eventually i have to go for

Will You - as performed (written?) by Hazel O'Connor, not heard it for many a year always used to be the last trach played in Dreamers! - Oldhams dodgiest and, sadly, long gone nightspot!

Where to start? Although I don't own it I think lenons imagine is a fabulous song, still thought provoking now. As for Dylans rolling stone WTF. I can't decide on mine, if i had to pick my desert island disks I would probably miss the boat.

:007:
Luxury Liner - International Submarine Band.
Baby's On Fire - Brian Eno.
September Gurls - Big Star.
Poptones - Public Image Ltd.

Road To Nowhere - Talking Heads
Waterloo Sunset - The Kinks
Proud Mary - Creedence Clearwater Revival
Monkey Gone To Heaven - The Pixies
There Is A Light That Never Goes Out - The Smiths
This Is The One - The Stone Roses

AT - what was the folk gig you went to? A cover of Love Will Tear Us Apart appears on the "The Big Session Volume 1" CD which is the Oysterband with a number of guests, this version of the song featuring June Tabor & John Jones of Oysterband on vocals. Great version too.

That might be the one, the gig I went to was at my local Irish club, Mikah P Hinson might have been there, I can't remember which gig it was though, they used to be loads at my local irish club until the neighbours complained.

This version had female vocals thats about all I can remmeber, I would love to find who it was though. The song was very country in terms of its music.

That Smith's song was one of my best memories, when I saw Mozza at Dublin December that was the last song he performed and he stopped singing it for 5 minutes the audience were singing it back to him so morrisey was in tiers.

Its a shame that dosn't seem to have been recorded anywhere.

Placebos cover of 'bigmouth strikes again' is a fab version, I wish Tori wound cover a Smiths song her version of 'smells like teen spirit' shows what a well written song that is.

God - that track ROCKS! I've got it on "Woman2Woman 2" (what a mouthfull) and also managed to get a copy of "Breaking glass" (the movie soundtrack from which it originates). The sound quality is excellent too, which is always a bonus.

I reckon "There is a light" or "The queen is dead" are also two very hot contenders, but in terms of sheer visceral fun and bubble gum perfection, I reckon it HAS to be "Teenage kicks".

Some of my favourite covers:

Boogie Shoes - Alex Chilton

All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix

St James' Infirmary Blues - White Stripes

Some other fine covers:

Walk on by - Isaac Hayes
The Weight - Aretha Franklin
Love Hurts - Gram Parsons & Emmylou Harris

Is that Love Hurts the same song as the one sang by Roy Orbison? I've heared an Emmylou Harris track on my John Denvor album she has a damn good voice.

I don't know who wrote Love Hurts actually. Robbin Gibb did a cover of it, me made quite a good job of it.

The 'original' recording was by the Everley Brothers, but I'm not sure if they wrote it. Nazareth also did a cover of it in the '70s.

A Change Is Gonna Come - Sam Cooke
Quiet Heart - Go Betweens
Another Girl Another Planet - Only Ones
Sex Machine - James Brown
