If you like the V16's sound, you should hear the H16 which was described as running sweetly up to 7,000rpm, after which it began to hurt the ear-drums  http://members.madasafish.com/~d_hodgkinson/brm-H16.htm

If we're talking best plane noises, and I know it's heresy to suggest, not much beats the sound of a Vulcan V Bomber flying 50 feet over your head. Sounds like the end of the world.
And best bike noise, if we're talking any era, has to be the Moto Guzzi V8 racer of the 50s. Amazing noise, and still doing demos!

The standard road bike makes a nice enough noise granted, especially with full Termis on. But It don't compare with full spec SBK version, especially since now they are bigger bored. Even so, I wouldn't expect just the one to be even close to a spitfire.. but a couple of rows of them launching from the starting grid at a race is an awesome noise.

You want loud? Try a Harrier jump jet hovering about 100-150 ft from the water in the middle of chatham docks, (no more than 200ft away head to jet). The sound was deafening and the ground was shaking even with all that water soaking up the thrust !!.

the thing is with jets they are just noise, with a spitfire it's music. bit like the difference between naim (the spitfire obviously) and the rest ;) .
