I believe that almost of the above can be traced back to the black folk/religious music that developed because of the slave trade. The influence of Gospel music pervades what might be called black music. .

pretty much comfirming my point above?

Anyway who said that America's great contribution to world culture was Mickey Mouse :)

Possibly.

Chris Rea has done a CD (well collection of 11 CDs) from the origins of the blues all the way through its different "incarnations". Got it recently and its very interesting.

I would upgrade it to good but Chris's voice for 11 straight CDs can be a bit much.

I'd imagine it could be.

I make a concious note NOT to listen to the blues....I find it so evocative (yes, i know its a bit of a specialist taste ) I just want make a start again trying to play it.....

.....means a LOT of spadework............:(

How does being into hifi stop you playing Blues?

Ok,

....its not my being into hifi. Its the AMOUNT I'm into it.

Its a long story, Mo (Richard I think?).

With spare time a limited comodity (as with everybody of course) its a fcat of life you acn't doeverything you want to.....and at the moment I am on a role with hifi tweaking.

FWIW, I got my passion for blues and boogie woogie from my Dads elder brother (no one else is interested) ...but regretably not his ability to play by ear....so its hard work all the way. Incrediibly frustratingly,I know theres loads of stuff now on you tube but like I say if I once start doing that.....the tweaking goes down the pan. :(

Well done that man.

That sounds a really interesting past. :)

Does "black american music" mean blues?

I have a passion for this....if i hadn't got interested in hifi bits, I'd be playing the stuff!

Your background in acoustics +vibrations etc also sounds really good.

:)

David

I suspect black american music means just what it says on the tin. It's a much misunderstood artform, much bigger than just the blues. It would include Gospel, Dixie, Jazz and a whole load more

Plus soul, funk, fusion, disco, rap, R&B, Detroit techno etc etc - in fact about 90% of everything that can be described as original American art.

Tony.

Hi,

Black american music is what it say on the tin. I like a wide range of music made and developed in the USA by black americans. It is a lot more than the blues. As Richard (Lordsummit) mentioned, it is a much misunderstood art form.

One reason for this is that alot of people have only latched onto one branch of the music. This is due to black music being very progressive and this has lead to changes in the styles.

I like mainly post war (2nd world war) black american music. In the last 60 odd years, there has been many changes in underground and popular black music. Not everyone likes these or understand the changes.

The slave trade has had a big influence on things in many ways. I agree that Caribbean (Jamaican) music and culture has had a big influence on styles such as hip hop, rap, dance music, dance culture, dj culture etc.

most of these styles are modern(ish).....

....the blues (IIRC) deveolped from negro spirtuals from the depression years of 1930s.....so was possibly here first!

..doesn't make anything right or wrong.....just wonder if stuff especially like R+B (not to be confuse iwth the origional rhythm and blues), soul and possible funk deveolped from the blues?

Blues in the 30s was the pop party music of the day to many black americans. R&B is the pop party music of today to many black americans. There has been a progression and a direct (indirect) influence.

Looks like we need to start a thread in the music room.

I'm Richard :) If I were you I'd let the tweaking go down the pan. That path leads to Audio Nervosa.

I know there are a great many who would agree with you!

:)

The path pehapts can lead to audio nervosa......but for the moment I am getting a great deal of fun from it and (IMO) good results, +I'm learning a lot.

I'll come back to boogie woogie tc one day, I'm just not quite ready to quite yet.

( I could do with getting work done on my piano and /or a decent keyboard first......that is of cours after ive resolved the camera issue.........)

Probably a very accurate observation.

I think its good the older styles are rekindled occassionally

eg the chris rea cd mentioned (although the reviews for it seem mixed!)

Not to be controversial (honest!) but why are people so negative about this??

They are not being negative as far as I can tell. If your hobby detracts from or reduces the time you spend listening to music then surely something has gone wrong somewhere?

naah.

Since when was listening to music the sole aim in life?

I like swimming for example, with no music in the background at all :)

...thats not negative......right....

I don't think so.

My hobby lets me hear more and more each time I try something new (normally!).

I split my time probably equally between the two.

:)

Not in the context that it was said in IMO. The impression I got was that you spent so long tweaking that you couldn't listen to music for as long as you used to. However, I really don't want to pollute this thread (which was to introduce a new mod) further and would like to say that I'm sorry if I got the wrong impression.
