    Surprised no one has recommended either Sun Ra or the Art Ensemble of Chicago to MO yet (tut tut Ian ;) )
    IMO, if you dig Mingus you will probably "get" AEoC - they have serious swing and deep funk, but it's free and dense, too. Works for me.
    And as for Sun Ra...

    Certainly is. I have a few of his CDs. And if Chet Atkins said he's good, he must be! On "Portraits", there are some Taylor/Atkins duets, which are very good. And, as you say, some of the solo stuff is extraordinary.
