Old car thread

Although one of the most stunning cars IMO that I have seen that I can never recall the name of was an older Maserati - can't recall model but the prettiest curvy little coupe, I saw one at Goodwood and just fell in love.

A Ghibli perhaps?

Or an Indy?

Neither is "little", but I guess size is relative:).

I do think even the modern Maseratis are achingly pretty, but classics are better proportioned.

Yup, I have to agree.

Drool.

Hi,

I used to have one of these.

A Rover P6.

It was in that colour as well!

It was great to drive. It had style. It had a 'clapometer' style speedometer. It had a cigar lighter. It had part leather seats. Mine the 2000 SC version. It was a 70s M reg.

I wish I had it still!

SCIDB

yeah, I think my step dad had one of these back in the 70's - but it was a burgandy colour - I remember we went on holiday (possibly scotland) and parked up in the street...when we got back we there wasn't enough room to pull out so my auld man wedged the 2 cars out of the way... :D

I went to the Le Mans Classic a couple of weekends ago, and that was a classic car buff's dream, just like the Goodwood events. The spectators' cars are nearly as much fun as the racers, and you can get up and close to the racers too.

My own classic in the making is a 1996 Mercedes E320 Cabriolet, owned from new.

Nice. Good to see so many of us choose an older (if not quite old) car to cherish.
My 'classic in the making' is a 1991 Honda NSX. Just like the one I sat in back in the early '90s at Earls Court, red with black roof, manual coupe, not owned from new, but I have had it for over 6 years.
Dev - I will have to take a look see if I have a pic on the PC at home, it was a smaller coupe I am sure - but it was parked near Lambos etc, so I may have been decieved by the perspective.

smeagol - Love the Ani 944 Turbo. I had a 86 Turbo for 2 years - still my favorite car.

Samantha - do you use the NSX every day or is it a special occasion car.

My classic-in-the-making is a Japan spec Legacy GT owned from new. Unfortunately it's brand new, so I can't talk about it here.
Love the NSX, and the Rx7 as well. THe Mazda was monumentally thirsty, though.
Another great looker was the Japan only Eunos Cosmo
Eunos launch commercial
A great ad :)

I love the NSX, nice choice there.

Also love the Legacy... I was thinking about a 3.0Rn with LPG, but couldn't really justify it (going to get a CM1 accord instead).

The Cosmo is interesting in that the last version had a triple-rotor engine (compared to the dual-rotors of the RX7 and 8) on offer.

A friend of mine has a 1974 Mitsubishi Galant GTO Coupe that he's restoring. He's had many galants (2000 2.0, 2001 2.5V6, 1997 Legnum VR4 (still has this too), 1991 2.0) and loves them to bits.

The ultimate wankel motor was the 4 rotor engine in the 787B. That thing made an unforgettable and quite unmistakable noise. Extremely reliable, too. Though better not to think about the fuel / oil consumption, which of course we didn't, back in the late 80s :-)
787B wait for the noise

I also did a few ads for the Mitsubishi Diamante. Sad to say that the most memorable thing about these was being paid large sums of money to drive 5 series BMWs at high speed round Europe in search of locations (and they always conspired to chose the wrong location).
I love the look of the later, mid-nineties VR4s. Gorgeous, shark-like things.

Sadly I commute 115 miles a day - do have a diesel motorway plugger serving duty.
The NSX is for fun only. I like it that way TBH as it keeps it special, if it was used every day, it has to take the shine off a little (so to speak). Although if I worked somewhere nicer, it would be nice to be able to use it occasionally to go to work in.

Legacy is a nice choice too - largely overlooked due to its more extrovert sibling, but great car with a really lovely burble.

I like cars that sound nice

Found the pics of the Maserati, but they are on my hard-drive, not an url so don't think I can attach here. :(

Very very pretty.

It is a 1954 Maserati A6G54 Zagato
- Any wonder I couldn't recall the model name :D

You mean this one?

You have great taste.

That is the one, exactly same one - you were obviously at the FOS last year too - and looks a similar time of day to when I took my pics, nearing the end of the day! - actually, 2nd thoughts, bit more sun in your pic :)

It is very lovely though.

Unfortunately no. I found the picture on the web. I have a book on Maserati, which has B&W pictures of this car though.

Them's the ones... I have a plain galant of the shark-like shape (ie bog standard 2.4 GDI FWD, no 4wd, AYC, turbos etc). I'll always have a soft spot for them, and wouldn't mind having a VR4 except for the fuel cost.

Badchamp

An awful lot of British car enthusiasts think the E type jag is the best looking British car ever built, but for me, although it has not quite got the power of the E type, I just think MGA`s are well...... beautiful...........bettered maybe only by a well sorted Austin Healey 3000 Mk1, BUT thats a very subjective view.

For me sometimes the E-type looks a bit ostentatious, the bonnet a bit too long. The Healeys, I agree, can be much better looking but (as per my 1st post above) the Triumph GT6 (Mk3)really floats my boat, followed very closely by the Daimler SP250 Dart.

Jeff I always had a problem with the GT6. Nice engine, but still a hardtop Spitfire. Now the TR6 I owned after the MGA. That was a different animal. Straight six smooth as hell wind in your hair motoring (Provided the fuel injection system was working LOL)

Porsche 944 Turbo SE - Now Thats a proper bonnet full!

My mate used to have a Ford Crapi (sic)

...talk about a sheep in wolfs clothing, you could have fitted two more passengers under the bonnet.

I would have an e type - but one of the (is it Lynx) modified ones. I just need to sell my liver first!

My mate had a Triumph Spitfire Hard top - in a addition to feeling like you were on a luge (all the thrill but in a wrong way), it was a total rot box. Apparently the yellow ones were renowned for this. I think anything to do with British Leyland had "lucky colours" and ones you should avoid like the plague.
