Out of the ones I mentioned you took out Joey Beltram's Energy Flash? I'd have thought that one would be right up your trance street. Does anybody know where I can get a cheap copy of the Bass-o-matic lp btw? I only had it on tape and I remember it with great fondness.

I've got a 7" single called Hack to the sound of the underground by V/VM, who is more famous for 'helping' The Aphex Twin. On Earworm records (RIP) and probably long deleted, but worth picking up if you come across it.

well MO, Hack to the sound of the underground is obviously Jack to the sound of the underground, hacked up, fecked up and generally butchered. It was released as part of the Earworm singles club in an edition of 250 with a floaty shoegazery band called Portal on the b-side.
If you visit http://www.normanrecords.com and search for v/vm you'll get quite a few hits including several other 'remixes' of his (including some of the aphex twin ones). Other possible highlights...
    Billy Ray Cyrix
    Guru Josh – infinity
    Lady in red/all night long
    Relax - The Full Story
    Relax - The Sex mixes
Relax - The Sex mixes REMIXES!
    Shostakovich- The Mising Symphony

aaand hack to the sound of the underground on sale for 1.95!!!

    Go treat yerself

Another one from the Sheffield label that Dean's already brought up

    LFO - We are Back,

also a bit tamer (apologies if they've been up before)

Bassheads - Ohh Baby (never found the 12" of this)
Cubic 22 - Night In Motion
    Teckno Too - Jetstar
    M C Duke - Miracles
A Guy Called Gerald - Voodoo Ray

Some of my other favourites have already been mentioned esp.

Frankie Knuckles Whistle song, I'm still after a version longer then 7" for this.

FSOL's Papua New Guinea existed in several versions, of which all we here now is the version that appeared on their album accelerator, anyone got any of the others?

    Cheers

A bit cheesy maybe, but in the right environment at the right time, Shut Up & Dance 'Raving I'm Raving' always brings a tear to my eye :D

How could I have forgotten Zero B 'Lock Up', possibly my all time favourite Old Skool anthem.

BTW, I reckon you guys would like this site ;)

Good shout. I have that on, I think, Rave Generation and it is neatly mixed into a track called Dub War which is also excellent but I can't remember who did it.

I don't think I've ever heard it! That's the only reason - will have to try to hear it at some point...

What was it like? I recently scored Opus3, Nomad and Oceanic CDs (and the ONLY Altern8 LP!) and they're all pretty good - defo into quad cheese territory though :)

"Never before have I seen such energy...."
"I'm raving I'm ra-a-a-ving - see the sweat pour off of me" etc etc - cheese indeed, but fun cheese! I love the way he sounds like a cross between scared sh1tless, euphoric, and in pain when he's singing - cool as :)

How far back can we go? Can I add:
Dazz band - Let it all blow
    Herbie Hancock - Rockitt
Steve "Silk" Hurley - Jack your body

Guess they're a bit old though?

I could never quite put my finger on that unique vocal style, but the above sums it up perfectly :D

Well, steve Silk Hurley was late 80's so surely that's in keeping with this thread, but Herbie Hancock was what '82?

Edited to add: Rockit was '83 - I just looked it up in me CD collection... ;)

I guess he overdid it on the beans and LSD, and then fell over and hurt himself :) Sounds like he still had a good one though...

Just wish I'd got into raving in 1991 (I was 16 so could have just got away with it!)

One of the best old skool remixes of a track that I've ever heard was by Shut Up And Dance, they played their version of Moonman's 'Galaxia' (classic trance tune!) at a night at Cafe En Seine in Peterborough and the whole place literally stopped dancing and stood there open jawed for a magical 10 seconds.

I know what you mean about raving in '91 (I was 21 ;) ) but I have to say, Old Skool is probably more popular now than it was then. A lot of the major players are out there DJing and recreating pretty much of what was happening 10 to 15 years ago.

In fact, Ratpack are playing down the road from me tonight :elephant:

Excellent, im glad this thread has sparked some wicked conversation about the old skool.

There a vinyl stall at spitalfields market i regularly visit and he has some great stuff ( overpriced though)

Seems people just throw out loads of vinyl, he collects it and then flogs to mugs like me who never bought the oroginals back in the day. ( I blame it my stingy parents for not giving me enough pocket money and my utter reluctance to get a weekend job as weekends were spent on a come down!!!):MILD: :MILD:

Some of the old skool stuff fetches quite a price too. Jimi polo was up for 23 squids.
