    The yellow wire is speed monitoring for the fan. PSUs don't use this feature generally (although I've had one PSU that had a connector that could be plugged into the motherboard to allow monitoring from windows of the PSU fan speed).

    Strangely, the colour code for fans is different to the rest of the computer. Standard AT and ATX colour coding has red being +5V, yellow +12V and black as 0V. Fans use red for +12V, yellow or blue or other colour for monitoring, and black for 0V (at least that's common!).

    Anyway, sounds like you've got it sorted michael. Glad if it saved you a few quid.

    My Dell Dimension 8300 with 2.4ghz HT P4 and a geforce fx5200 and loads of other crap has only got a 200W psu from new and never has an issue so I guess its all good
