I've got one of those MS optical "intellimouse" mice which is just your basic optical mouse with browser back/forward buttons on the sides and a scroll wheel which also clicks as 3rd button - one of these to be precise and it's developed an extremely irritating problem.

Sometimes (it's getting close to 50% of the time now) when I click the left (main) button it acts as though I've double clicked. I'd like to open the thing up to see if maybe the microswitches just need a bit of cleaning but I'll be damned if I know how to open one of those things up. Looks completely sealed to me. Anyone know if it's possible?

Otherwise it's a trip down to FNAC for a new mouse.

    Michael.

One of my logitechs did this. It's a problem with the microswitch and usually nothing you can do about it. New mouse time. Personally I prefer logitechs.

Thanks for the info Isaac. Saves me the trouble of trying to open it up. Looks like a new mouse then...off to the shops we go :)

Bought myself a nice MS Optical Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0 (to give it its full name  ). Very pleased. The scrollwheel is a joy to use compared to my old one :)

The scroll wheel on my old MS Optical mouse used to have epileptic fits. I'm sure it just needed a clean, but I'm damned if I could find out how to open it.

I don't think the MS Optical ones are as reliable as other brands, I have seen 2 MS ones fail whilst my bog standard Logitech is now 4 years old and still working perfectly!!

I had a few problems with my MS Optical mouse the other day, changed the batteries , etc then realised that the reciever thingy had fallen down the back of the computer desk. Once it was back in line of sight it worked faultlessly. I find the MS gear to be very comfortable to use and always seems to be good quality plastic , etc, Never found a use for the 'side clicky' scroller wheel though.

On the subject of scroller wheels do any of you guys ever get sore fingers, i don't think i could survive if i worked in IT, it is too damaging to ones health, give me Noise, high pressure gases and noxious chemicals any day :) .
Mind you I probably spend more time glued to this thing in my leisure time than a full time IT guy in work time..... ;)

My new mouse has a scroll wheel that tilts sideways for horizontal scrolling and already I've got used to using it and find it really useful. Also, if you click the scrollwheel it switches you through all your running aps (a bit like Alt-Tab). The rotation of the scroll wheel though is just gorgeous. Really smooth and nicely weighted. Quality.

The mouse I got was this one ...in black leather :p . Actually feels really nice :)

Which reminds me that I've had a mouse with tiltwheel for horizontal scrolling for months and never used it for that purpose.

    Thanks Michael.

Can't wait for this mouse to fail though. I switch between apps a million times a day and using the wheel instead of Alt+Tab would be a refreshing change.

I found the horizontal scrolling to be too slow and unresponsive to be any use. I'm sure you can change it but I cant really be fecked.
