Really hard to drive speaker

Folks,

I am sure that this request is a rather unusual one, but I would like to know what is currently, in production a Speaker generally known to be hard to drive but of good sound quality and "High End" abilities, but remaining semi-affordable and resonably portable.

Dynaudio Focus 140 stand mount. Low impdedance, low sensitivity at £1100 RRP.

Any tips? Please no Quad ESL's, Apogee Diva's etc, small standmounters that handle ton's of power and sound great, with great bass would sound like the trick.

Ciao T

The Apogee Diva's were never "THAT" difficult to drive, well not compared to the 1 Ohm Scintilla or "THE APOGEE" the original Full Range.

IMO still the finest range of speakers ever produced.

Not sure about the current line-up but Thiel used to be regarded as being difficult to drive,...come to think of it, never ever heard a pair of Thiels that sounded good anyway :p

I had a pair of Martin Logan's for a while when I was living in the USA, can't remember which model they were (think it started with the letter P  ), I found them extremely coloured and difficult to get anything that resembled the music from them,...not sure if that qualifies them for being difficult to drive.

The Acoustic Energy AE1 Mk3s take some driving, are quite comfortable on the end of my A5 power amp, could soak up more easily.

difficult to drive

You want a complex load, try a Czech Republic made /Italian speaker desiger/ Xavian XN 270. www.xavian.cz
i think the designer made these speakers for you.... perhaps lesser known. If you move these, you do have a good amp.

old acoustic reasearch speakers like AR19's horrible to drive... any old EPOS speaker.. also hard to run.. and has no one mentioned ATC... very low sensitivity and 6 ohms... not an easy drive.

some old kefs to were only 4 ohms and low as hell sensitivity.

Well, first, we can/want to use only current production.

Secondly, we HAVE the SCM7. Sadly it is not "hard enough" to drive, in other words, it seems to give up well before the Amp does.... ;-)

So, harder, lower please. Totem Mani 2 and B&W N805s are the current competition....

OK then, how about Tannoy Kingdoms T?:).

IIRC, Paul Messenager's NAP500 had problems driving these monsters. Also, I hope your floor is strong enough.

I don't fancy dragging these around on the show circuit. And if where to use something as big as that, it would be our own 15" semi-coax monitor or maybe even the grown up variant with a 24" subwoofer to get the final 32' organ pipe tones (does that qualify qualify as tone or weapon?).

No, fairly small please....

Possibly Tony, but I believe PM thought the Kingdoms were prime candidates for biamping. The main reason being the very low impedence at low bass, they dipped to 3Ohms.

I don't think the N805S's are that hard to drive, but I could be wrong... Are very happy on the end of a "lowly" NAIM NAIT 5.
