    Hi HM

Glad you like the epos Es11's.

They are revealing - one of their best features IMO!

Hope you dont change them, they can make most comparitively priced speakers sound lacklustre and drab.

Linn. Arcam, Meridian all have mid-bandy family flavour, but might be a little out of budget.

the 965BX is about as mid-band full as you can get!
a little muffled though to some ears.

Dont know what this is like?

MD just adds jitter of its own, as I understand it, at a higher level than any other digital format!

Bottleneck....I hope i will keep them too, just that I don't want my system to turn all my music inside out beyond enjoyment. Hoping the CD player will be the final hurdle to relative hifi heaven as I don't think I'm getting the most out of the A400 and the Epos yet. No luck on that link btw...wheres the cd players?
and another quick one....is 'clipping' the distortion in bass you get when playing at high vloumes? like a rubbish farty noise? whys that happen? obviously i've been testing at volume:)

as far as Im aware, its your amp running out of steam.

it looks like he is just launching a new website!

    ooh flash!

just call him on 01379 870873. tell him your budget is 150 plus your trade in, what equipment youve got, and that you want something quality but 'warm' and see what he suggests.

by the way, my opinion of dacs and transports - its a lot easier to get a quality dac for under 150 than it is a transport.. for that money Id be sticking with an integrated CDP, trading in your eclipse.

The old site was much better. Too much scrolling on the new one.

Some of the CD players mentioned would be quite good solutions. I had a pair of ES12s myself for a few years and used a Rotel 965BX thru a Quad 77 with them - and very nice it was too. The A400 i heard many years ago was good but quite explicit, so for my ears at least (im very sensitive to bright/overtly trbly components) a 965 or similar would be good in that system. Ive recently upgraded my Rotel with a cheap dac (uses PCM1716 dac) and decent power supply. This is the first time ive ever been totally happy with any alternative to my Rotel. This combo blows away anything currently priced around 3-400 (for me at least - i know, i listened to a few). So based on that an older player using a CDM4/19 transport could be had for 40-50 quid and a nice offboard dac for circa 100. This would probably be pretty good. :)

Perhaps, but for making compilations, it's a lot easier than using CDR :)

    hiya,

I dont know much about the 'discrete LE' bit...

the plain '965 was certainly about as warm as CD players get, if a little rolled off at frequency extremes.

That might work well with what you have, unfortunately, only way to find out is to try..

Will the vendor allow a home trial, or SOR?

Not going to have much choice unfortunately as I won't be able to get to him to home trial. Seems to be a fairly sensible choice for a CD player though, assuming I'm right about needing a slightly warmer sound with what I got. Bit worried about the word 'muffled' coming up though....I just need a bit of a richer sound more than any muffling. Might give this one a go and see how it goes. I do have in the back of my mind a thought that I might have to switch Epos for Tannoys of some kind but hopefully the CD player will sort it out.

The discrete LE has a discrete components output stage and the LE bit refers to some subtle power supply upgrades (ie a few better caps here and there). I have never heard an LE discrete so cannot comment on its sound. Another option is a X-10D missing link valve buffer thingy that adds warmth. That could be useful if your eventual player lacks it

I've just upgraded my Rotel RCD971 (with a Naim CD5). Haven't got round to advertising the Rotel yet but if your interested give me a shout for more details.

    Cheers

    rotel 965 LE

The 965 LE is a lean sounding player,so no improvement IMO.

ah well...just closing a deal on the 965 LE. I'll let you know how it goes! Must admit this whole brightness/warmness gets on my nerves....seems people can rate a component at completely opposite ends of the scale....doesn't make it easy for those of us not able to get a demo. Ah well the joys of a subjective hobby i suppose!
