Scissor Sisters

Still haven't heard scissor sisters cover - but everyone I know has said its sh*te.

I bought the album, mainly as there was nothing else new out that I wanted a few weeks ago, and it's not bad - they change styles throughout the songs and there's nothing else like Comfortably Numb on there really.

Nicely played, recorded and produced though, I'll say that for 'em.

The original Comfortably Numb wasn't a throwaway pop tune, though,

That's the problem with Floyd (post Syd, anyway). They wrote a couple of decent pop songs but then insisted on drowning them at birth by trying to turn them into something profound. I think the Scissor Sisters are doing them a favour, frankly.

If you want profundity Roger Waters isn't the best bet IMO.

Yep, quite a diverse sound throughout. It's obviously largely "disco" with Bee-Gees, Elton, and Boney M, springing to mind when listening I found. Infact, the further into the album I got, the MOre Elton John seemed to be an obvious influence.

There's some quite good tracks on there, and some fillers too. Listened to it twice over the weekend, and wouldn't mind hearing it again.

Music doesn't always have to be deep and meaningful! Often it's best when it is yeah, but sometimes a li'l cheese is good.

I'd also agree with juboy on the quality of how it's all put togeather.

ian,
I've got a bike. You can ride it if you like.
It's got a basket, a bell that rings and
Things to make it look good.
I'd give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it.

profound? no, just drug addled weirdness.
cheers

That's my point. With Syd in the band they made no effort to be profound, they just played good psych pop tunes (although "Bike" isn't one of the better ones, it must be said). It was when he left that they decided they were Serious Musicians With A Message.

I have to say, the first time i heard them i though they were TRULY AWFULL, but the cover of comfortably numb seems to have really grown on me.

Still would'nt buy it, but i now have a little respect for them

OK, only just heard the Comfortably Numb cover last week and I knew there was a thread about it here somewhere. Well? I like it. I laughed out loud when I heard it. Oh and btw, I am a Pink Floyd fan :)

I think people are really getting a bit too precious about this - come on, it's Pink Floyd, it's not a religion for chrissakes! Live a little, have some fun ;)

Can't say I like the rest of the album enough to buy it though. That "Take your mama out tonight" track (whatever it's called) really gets on my nerves. Seems like the ugly lovechild of a union between Guns 'n' Roses and Bon Jovi :chunder: . Some of the other tracks have merit though but Comfortably Numb is excellent :)

Michael.

I thought "take yer mama out"...or whatever its called is great. Nice to have a bit of lively, feelgood, unpretentious, original music out for once and from a source of obvious talent. Will get the album one day.

Edit...just reread your post Michael...ugly lovechild of jovi and GNR? I really can't see that at all...strikes me as being totally the opposite!?

I'd agree, 'Take Your Mama' is a great song. Nice and bouncey and has that timeless quality (probably as it's modelled on Elton John's 70s period).

It used to be my favourite track on the album but I'd have to say that's now 'Mary'. Great song. Got tickets to go and see them in a few weeks, quite looking forward to it.

There's something about the "gravelliness" of the lead singers voice that really reminds me of Axl Rose and the "take yer mama" song has a sort of "rocked up" country theme going to it that really annoys me.

Now that people mention it though I can see similarities to Elton John also. Don't ask - my mind works in weird ways :D

Michael.

They are strange band who seem to apeal to a wide audience, even the hardcore indie clubs play their stuff. Its an another album I am considering getting.

I absolutley hate this band with a vengance. Purely awful !!!

Actually admittedly I do quite look the song (and video) to "Laura" thats quite amusing in fact. I havent heard much else, but from the first song I hated it! ;)

Haven't heard Comforatably Numb but everything else I have heard by them reminds me immediately of Elton John & Kiki Dee doing Don't Go Breaking My Heart. Ground breaking stuff!

i particularly like the 5th track (something about lovers on the back seat...) and the last track that's the uk bonus track. some of it is filler, and the comfortably numb track is a bit throw away, but overall the album is pleasent enough with a few standout tracks.

and frankly many people seem to get a little precious about religions, too... :JPS:

Saw them live last night as was very impressed. Excellent musicianship and vocals that were equally as good, better in most cases, than on the album. They were probably one of the best live bands I've seen for musical and vocal ability. I had previously thought them a bit of a novelty band but after seeing them live I think it's even more a shame that they initial gained notoriety from 'that' cover version - this is one seriously good band.

The Comfortably Numb thing is definitely an improvement on the original, stripping the whining and guitar noodling from it and turning it into a throwaway pop song is an excellent idea.

(Incoming!)
