whi's got the biggest cartridge/amp/cdp?
Well, I've got a Naim system, and what with this being Zero Gain and all that, I bet none of you have got a Naim system. Which just about says it all, really.
I bet none of you know whose first thread said: "I have just joined up recently, I live in London, and my hobby is hi fi. I am looking to make some new hi fi friends so that we can all get together on a fairly regular basis, and listen to music... with a couple of pints and snacks.. I think it would be fun but above all, we can all learn new things as we all own different hi fi equipment and have different tastes in music etc." sadly that only had two replies. So the next thread began: "Did all of you audiophiles realise that the room will make a far more significant difference, which is indubitable ? Think about the distortion of sound due to the room compared with the distortion of the signal due to a mere cable. Lets discuss..." to which the first reply was "I agree". * but then the assertions "there's not much that can be done about [booming bass] either. The size of the room is important but so is the shape. you can't change that, and yes, ... you can use eq, and you can use acoustic products, but they dont work." but still with hints of wanting to be loved: "I have read about your system on the internet. Perhaps we could get together to have a chat and listen one day?" and having to endure pity, "I think you guys will probably lose poor old Johnny with this,as and when he gets back....he may even be forced to start another thread", naming names and provoking him to more strident statement: "As far as analysis goes, the ear works the same as a computer. It performs an fft on the signal. <cut> In any case we audiophiles aren't interested in mere signal analysis. What we really want to know is how music is affected by various distortions. So you can quote all the facts and figures till the cows come home, but the bottom line is, it is irrelevant." But still its "we audiohiles". Then it gets confusing, or perhaps plain that before January is out, there is already a winner for the 'senseless argument' trophy, even if there are sometimes glimpses of real questions, and even some wish to have sensible argument with others. So that with most recent thread begun, with: "If you had the funds to actually design a hi fi listening room from the beginning, how would it be done ? What are the calculations to be done and what shape or sizewould be the best room ? ie a room which has no boomy bass etc.. " the first reply, from someone who had made obviously gone out of his way to be friendly in his replies to the newcomer, was reduced to, "One would think from your previous posts that you already know the answers to this! I know what I would do but frankly, whether or not I feel like disclosing this info to you is another matter." http://www.zerogain.com/forum/search.php?searchid=121584
now that's just senseless, so par for the course - and as for the state of your room!! Anyone would think you cared more about your stupid hifi .... talk about a pair of hair dryers!
