Small and easy to drive

Loud is relative. If your living room ain't that big and you're sitting 8 or 9 feet away, decent small speakers will be loud enough.

A sub helps with the bass.
 
Most full-range speakers will be efficiant won't they? I keep thinking of those Fostex drain-pipe speakers.

what I mean is a small speaker will either be inefficient and have decent bass extension, or of normal efficiency but with seriuosly curtailed bottom end.

If the small speaker is a sealed cabinet, these characteristics will be even more to the fore, but none of this stops small speakers being entertaining. It's just that if you want efficiency, power handling and extension, you will need something else.

NB. I sit 8ft from some very large loudspeakers in a small room. It's fun!
 
I'm thinking of 88db + and no less than 6ohms minimum. I'm having a domestic rearrange and listening in the nearfield again(Which I think I prefer), My Audes dont sound good firing across my 27x15 lounge (too much bass) and I'm thinking of going for some quality standmounts and having an active sub for those Saturday morning moments. Budget is up to 1k SH for the speakers and stands. I'd go for Harbeths but never see any S/H and obviously not so easy to drive but do sound great IMHO.

I have toyed with this sub/standmount idea for ages and have now decided to take the plunge. Lots to do wth technobears recent additions!

20wpc will work fine for Harbeths (C7s, M30s or SH5s at least) in the nearfield.
Avoid Genelec.
 
TBH 88db isnt all that efficient really, and a nominal 6 ohm load isnt that tricky to find either..

I thought you meant 93db+
 
I use some Totem model 1 sigs,very small,dyn main driver,seas tweeter,very fast sounding,with a superb out of the box sound,1,700euros new from Spain,as they sell direct.
 
Try Focal-JM Lab

Focal Electra 906's will fit your needs. They have just been replaced by the 1007 model, so you should be able to pick up a pair cheaply. You might even get a 907Be, with a berillium tweeter instead of titanium.

Bass is not outstanding, but for vocal, jazz or classical they are great. The reflex port faces forward, so you can use them close to a wall without boominess, and in my room they sound better with the grilles on (which pleases my wife).

What all of them? Which models have you heard? Rather a sweeping generalisation I would suggest.

I'd suggest the original poster uses his own ears.

I said 88db as I felt that would be as realistic for small standmounts, higher would be good as I have a paltry 34 watts! I'm not going active as I love the rest of my system. I used to run LS3/5as +AB1 bass units which I loved, absolutley to my taste and perfect for the system 90% of the time but they did lack some volume and a little bass extension at lower volumes frankly if I could find some with the AB1s I'd probably go back to them..

I'm not sure I could drive Compact 7s properly but I know they sound perfect for my tastes and system. I can't currently stretch to the £1500 odd they cost. So in short I have around £750-1000 for some big standmount or small floorstanders S/H with an easy load and that BBC style sound.

I listen to everything but have a tendency toward Jazz,chilled and and electronic.

I've listened fairly extensively to Genelecs of various sizes, from the smallest to the largest models.

Of course the original poster should use his own ears, but he did ask for others' opinions.
 
Jools it sounds like you're looking for a BBC type sound.

A big second hand pair of harbeths perhaps, spendors.. something along those lines I reckon for the money.

Or how about an audionote kit?

I really think you'll like the mids on these, its generous like a big BBC speaker.
