I have a very modest CD player, a Marantz CD6000 OSE LE, but its still a decent player by any standards.

It sounds far better than any DVD player I have heared, the vocals have warmth, the bass is fast and solid, the treble is well controled, with £50 DVD players I find the sound harsh and bass is woefully lacking.

Even my parents Sony CDPXE530 sounds much better than cheapo DVD players.

The real threat to CD players is the fact people don't seem to give a toss about sound quality anymore. Audiohpiles are a dying fab.

    Hi,

Which in turn is a direct result of the McDonaldisation of the Mainstream Music industry which has turned Music from an Art that speakes to the soul into a craft that principally is driven by image and advertising and mostly devoid of any art in order to make as much money as possible.

    Ciao T

PS, does anyone else finds it funny that the Record Industry is paying it's Execs massive bonuses for record profits while whining on all the time how all these evil downloaders reduce it's sales?

I think Sony's latest debacle with respect to copy protection to prevent the evil of ripping CD's may result in a few taking home a slightly smaller bonus this year,if all those law suits in the US get going.

You are a snob, but anyway,do you think you can tell the difference between a sqeezey thing and a decent cdp?

    Jon

I don't think Brenda has any better voice than any backing singer in the West End,Simon Cowell has that spot on,and I don't really think she has a big market.Shane on the other hand, could make it big.I agree the plumber has a great voice,he is the only one I woul probably fork out some monet on.

And what about signing 80 million quid deals with the likes of Robbie bl**dy Williams, surely this shows how profitable the industry is for them (I'd be more inclined to pay him 80 mill to keep him out of a recording studio).

Do you think real hifi fans (trying hard to avoid the term 'audiophile') are a dying breed? Surely since the 50's/60's when affordable stereo's became available the market has been dominated by the cheap and cheerful. You have to appreciate that the vast majority of the population are content to listen to the hit parade via cheapo plastic cacky boxes, and think (maybe rightly) that people like us are crackpots, to put it politely. ....and they may have a point.....

    Hi,

    Thank you.

That must depend on the CD-Player, surely. Care to be more specific about the "squeezy thing" and the "CD Player"?

I'm not disagreeing. That means however she has a better voice than practically the whole Pop Scene's "Artists". I think she'd be great singing Jazz standards in a nice smokey but upmarket Jazz Caffee for example, maybe in duett with Andy, I FOR ONE would actually like that, not that there is much of a market for it.

Well, IF Maria had stayed in and made a record of interesting material I'd be interested. Yes, Shane could make it as big as Gareth Gates and co. Which means he is markatable and has enough talent to scrape by, barely.

Anyway, (Un)Reality TV outside Ally McBeal seriously sucks.

I watch come dancing, nothing better than seeing want to be celebrities failing. As for the 'Z'-factor it is aimed towards nincompoops and under twelve year olds.

Never heard a squeeze box so cannot comment, but there is a lot of compression on the new cd's I own eg Kaiser Chiefs.

Yep,Maria had some sex appeal, she was very nice, but average singer.Brenda does nothing for me though.

ps the early Ally McBeal (pre-stick insect) were very good, the dream scenes in particular.

    Hi,

In other words all that's needed for a great Pop Career, if somone backs her.... ;)

Among the remaining lot, she and Andy I feel are best conveying emotions, passion with their voices while having good vocal abilities. Maria did the same thing pretty well, but would have been rather more marketable....

    Yeah, Ally rocks.

That isn't what I said (you're referring to my post) and isn't what happened. The point was the 2 sources where so different that they could be differentiated without fail every time. What was interesting was that the owner of the 25K CDP preferred the iPod when he didn't know which was playing (presumably thinking he was easily identifying the superior sound of his 25K CDP). Once he'd had the chance to hear both knowing which was playing, and therefore able to tell which was which going forward, his preference miraculously changed to his own 25K CDP ;)

There was clearly something the iPod was doing which was pleasing to listen to.

    Michael.

That was Limahl - famous for the theme track to the 'Never Ending Story' movie. I've got one or two Kajagoogoo tracks here somewhere, as well as the 'Never Ending Story' - a bit of an 80s music fan!

Lemar is an R&B singer - from about 3 years ago, I think.

    Hi,

Yeah, Limahl was behind quite a bit of interresting music.

Nah, he was on "Fame Academy" and was third, he really hit it big in late 04 and 05. His "If there is any justice" was all over airplay in 05 and one of my favourites....

No. I haven't said or implied that it was a 'slayer' of anything.

I think Lemar is the only lad off all thes "talent" shows that I've found listenable. All the rest are drivel. I like the was his voice has a silky top-end, but a slightly gravely mid-range. Easy on the ears IMO.

And of course CD players will die eventually, much in the same way Cassette players died, and 8-track died. Although, like Vinyl, due to the sheer numbers involved, it will never truly "die", it will just become marginalised & specialised.

And who knows, once record companies take solid state & downloading seriously, they might actually start to take QC seriously and provide "unbejittered", "lossless" downloads for playback on high-quality SS devices?

Its a good 20 years away though, and I plan to have a more active/sporty, less financially ruinous hobby by then ;-)
