    Right-o, I'm up for a crack at this. First off, I've based this on a quick scan of the local market rather than the UK market, and adjusted the 500UKP to roughly 1200AUD, so...

    * CDP - Marantz CD63 mk2 KI Sig @ $500
    * Amp - Technics SU-Z400 class A @ $60
    * Speakers - JR149 & sub @ $595
    * Cables - $45 (well, its just wire!)
    TOTAL = AUD$1,200

    Stuart.

    HEYBROOK SIGNATURE MK 2- PRE& POWER AMPS - Ebay £325

    Black speaker stands. NO RESERVE! 99p

    Total - £445, leaving 40 odd quid for cables.

    OK fair enough, but the system still actually works without it!

    This thread seems to have evolved into a "wishful thinking prices list" or "what bids are at now on e-bay after being listed for 5 minutes and not what they close at" rather than real prices. I mean A Dacmagic 2 for £10 or a Rotel RCD 965 BX at £30 - come on!

    Bob - classic answer - don't pay £pay prices! Anything more than £30 for a 12 year old CD player is bloody stupid - no matter how much it cost in 1993.

    I think going secondhand is a bit dubious - depends on too many variable, so I've gone new......

    Yamaha AX396 amp - £150
    Sony SCDXE597 CD/SACD - £130
    AE Aegis Evo1 - £140
    Appollo A2 Stands - £45
    QED Qunex1 - £20
    5m QED original - £13.75
    All from Superfi

    =£498.75 :D

    Alternatively....
    Cambridge Azur 340C CD - £150
    Cambridge Azure 340A Amp - £150
    Mission M731 - Speakers - £120
    From Richer Sounds

    QED Qunex2 - £30
    5m QED SA - £27.50
    From superfi

    2x large paving slabs - £10
    Masonary spray paint for slabs - £5

    = £492.50

    OK, for brand new...

    Marantz CD5400 CD player £120 (Richer Sounds)

    Denon PMA255UK amplifier £100 (Richer Sounds)

    Tannoy Revolution R2 speakers £150 (Hyperfi - ex display)

    QED Qunex 2 £30

    QED SA 6m £30

    Gold Bananas 8 £16

    £446

    If those speakers went, I would have:

    Mordaunt Short 902 £120 (Richer Sounds)

    and some suitable stands e.g. Mission Stancette.

    As we're looking for the £500 mark why not

    Cambridge Audio CD36 Black (CD Player) £100 (Richer Sounds)
    Denon PMA255UK amplifier £100 (Richer Sounds)
    Mordaunt Short 914 £250 (Richer Sounds) floor standers so don't need stands.

    Ok that's £450 plus cables, but if you're buying it all from Richer, you can barter for a bit of discount on the cables and plugs, I did! :)
    Oh and I'd get their warranty as well, you can't loose!

    Indeed. But with the 902s, you have the option to add a sub later without having to sell anything and you'd then end up with a better system than with the 914s ;)

    The Denon is a good amp. I had it's ancestor, the PMA250SE.

    As for CD, I would have chosen a Sony but couldn't find any :(

    The 914's don't have a sub, its only the 908's like mine that have subs. I had a pair of 904's before, I thought they where the best speaker for the money, I tested about 5 or 6 different sets. (which really annoyed the staff at Richer!). Don't think I can say the same for the 908's but then I didn't pay full price for them, long story! :)

    I put the CA amp in, cos it looked a better deal, to get the "I saved more than I spent" line! :)

    Ah but Lee - you'll end up with a "mullet" system if you use the 914s with that source :)

    Hmm- I was thinking about this the other day and felt that;

    1x Cambridge Audio CD4SE - £80-£120 depending on condition;
    1x Marantz PM66KI £150odd for an excellent example; http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3280&item=5781527248&rd=1
    1x Project Debut TT 2nd hand £40+ http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3283&item=5781457276&rd=1
    1 Pair Rogers DB101's- Last ones were going for £80 albeit in silly colours.
    Atacama SE24's http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=96957&item=5781230311&rd=1
    1 Mark Grant Interconnect- £25 off the AV Forums
    QED original £2.50/m

    Under £500 and should be pretty entertaining.

    Well
